  1. Defining your project: Project Description

  2. What is a project description? • A description of the proposed action and the action area (area including all direct and indirect effects). • Can be documented in: • biological evaluation (or similar document) • NEPA documents • draft plans for different portions of the action • correspondence • telephone records, meeting notes, and other miscellaneous documents

  3. Project Description Project Description Who Who When When Who Who When When What What What What Where Where Why Why How How Where Where Why Why How How Connecting the dots Description of the action Effects of the action Cumulative effects Status of the species and habitat Conclusion Environmental baseline Permit available?

  4. Project description – what to cover? • Who are you? • What is your project? • Where? • Stressors produced? • When? • Birds or their resources exposed? • Effects anticipated? • What conservation measures are you incorporating?

  5. What analysis advises project description? • Effects analysis: A thorough analysis of an action’s effects on the species and habitat is an essential component of the developing a project description. • Impact Analysis: Effects that are avoided need not be addressed. In these cases, you can identify potential stressors and measures taken to manage the stressor.

  6. Analyzing Effects • Effects = Exposure + Response • Exposure – which organisms and habitats will be affected by the components of the proposed action? • Response – what happens when the organisms and habitat are affected by the components of the proposed action?

  7. ACTIONAREA WOOD BUFFALO NATIONAL PARK The area to be affected directly or indirectly by the proposed action and not merely the immediate area involved in the action. RANGE OF SPECIES MISSOURI RIVER ACTION SITE (DAM) PLATTE RIVER ARANSAS NWR

  8. Description of the action – what stressors produced? Effects of the action Cumulative effects Population and habitat status Conclusion Environmental baseline Conservation Measures? Permit Available? Take Occurs?

  9. Description of the action – what stressors produced? Conservation Measures to address stressor production Effects of the action Cumulative effects Population and habitat status Conclusion Environmental baseline
