About the African American Museum of Iowa The African American Museum of Iowa began as the African American Heritage Foundation in the basement of a Cedar Rapids church in 1994. As word about the foundation spread, donations of artifacts and stories from the past began to pour in. In need of a larger space, the museum’s first temporary location opened in Westdale Mall in 2000. The museum’s current building opened in 2003. It houses two exhibits, a learning lab, board room, library, safe storage for the museum's collections, offices, and the Aldeen Davis Celebration Hall. Museum staff travels all over the state to provide traveling exhibits and education programs with the belief that Iowa’s heritage should be accessible to everybody. Your rental helps the museum complete its mission. Thank you.
