What is Information Literacy? Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring students to “recognize when information is needed and have to ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the needed information.” American Library Association. Presidential Committee on Information Literacy. Final Report. (Chicago: American Library Association, 1989).
Information literacy is needed because students…. • click without reading. • are overwhelmed with information choices. • spend an hour searching the internet for information found easily in a reference source. • hit the print button thinking their research is completed.
Information literacy is needed because students…. • fail to evaluate sources or their relevance to the project. • lack the ability to synthesis information. • find the ideas of others more fascinating than their own ideas. • engage in plagiarism by cutting and pasting.
Why is information literacy important? • Equips students with lifelong learning skills • Includes critical reflection of information • Emphasizes the global nature of information • Allows use of relevant information for informed decision making • Extends beyond just knowing how to use computers
Information literate students should… • know when they have a need for information. • identify information needed to address a given problem or issue. • find needed information and evaluate the information. • organize the information. • use the information effectively to address the problem or issue.
