Why go to Summer Camp in Ann Arbor? • Concentrated period of study in methodology • Instruction in some methods not available at UF • Excellent instructors from throughout the US and Canada • Contacts!
But I don’t know anything yet! • Track I • Intro to Computing • Intro to Stats and Data Analysis • Math for Social Scientists
I’ve had a couple of courses already. • Track II • Math for Social Scientists II • Regression Analysis • Scaling and Dimensional Analysis • Mathematical Models
I’ve had some advanced stuff already at UF. • Track III • Advanced Multivariate • Simultaneous Equations • MLE and Advanced MLE • Time Series
I’m a methods junkie. • Track IV • MLE • Bayes • Modern Regression
Competitive 4 week workshops • Quantitative Analysis of Crime and Criminal Justice (funded) • Methodological Issues in Quantitative Research on Race and Ethnicity • Quantitative Historical Analysis • Longitudinal Analysis of Historical Demographic Data (funded)
“Off campus” workshops • Analyzing Developmental Trajectories • Amherst, MA; June 15-18 • Latent Trajectory/Growth Curve Analysis • Chapel Hill, NC; July 6-10 • Hierarchical Linear Models I: Introduction • Amherst, MA; June 1-5 • Bloomington, IN; August 10-14 • Introduction to Applied Bayesian Statistics • Chapel Hill, NC; June 8-12 • Designing, Conducting, and Analyzing Field Experiments • New Haven, CT; July 29-31 • Network Analysis • Theory and Methods: Bloomington, IN; July 6-10 • Introduction: Chapel Hill, NC; August 3-7
When is it? • First Session • June 22-July 17 • Second Session • July 20-August 14 • It helps if you let Michael Martinez know that you are applying. • Apply online.
Can I use my summer fellowship funding at UF? • Sort of. • If you are on fellowship at UF, you need to register for eight hours graduate credit at UF. You should register for (part of) those hours as an independent study with someone in your department. • Then you may use your stipend to pay for the Program Scholar tuition at ICPSR.
Is there other funding available? • Political Science Department • We expect to make two $2200 awards available for students planning to attend ICPSR. • Applications to Prof. Martinez in the form of a two page statement describing how the program will enhance your research. • ICPSR allocation to FCPR • One fee waiver for a four-week session.
Competitive Scholarships • Clogg Scholarship • Political Science and Sociology • Partial support for a very limited number of students (8 or 9 in Political Science last year) who are likely to contribute to the development of methods during their careers • Past winners include • MagdaGiurcanu (2008) • Dan Cicenia (2006)
Competitive Scholarships • APSA Political Methodology Group and ICPSR • Janet Box-Steffensmeier Award will be awarded to a limited number of women Ph.D. students • John A. Garcia Award will be awarded to a limited number of minority Ph.D. students • Each provides a fee-waiver. • To apply for the Garcia or the Box-Steffensmeier award, eligible students should submit • (1) a Summer Program Application form • (2) a Vita • (3) a cover letter from the student explaining why s/he wants to attend the program and how this will aid in completion of the Ph.D. • (4) a faculty letter endorsing the student
Competitive Scholarships • Miller Scholarship • In honor of the late Warren Miller, this scholarship is established to support a promising young scholar whose research builds on data from the National Election Studies.
UM Survey Research Center Summer Institute • Not part of ICPSR! • June 1 - July 24 in Ann Arbor • Roughly, SRC can teach you how to design and conduct a survey, and ICPSR can teach you to analyze and interpret the data (as well as non-survey data). While the two programs complement each other nicely, and while they are both under the auspices of the University of Michigan's ISR, they are not linked in any way. • You cannot use ICPSR source funds (eg., Clogg or Miller scholarship) for the SRC program.
Survey Research Center Summer Institute • Workshops include • Analysis of Survey Data (I and II) • Computer Analysis of Survey Data • Questionnaire Design • Survey Non-response • Focus Groups • Structural Equation Models • Combining Quantitative and Qualitative Methods • Qualitative Data Analysis w/ or w/o computers • Web survey implementation
Survey Research Center Summer Institute • Summer Scholar tuition depends on number of credit hours • 3 to 5 credit hours $2400 (before May 1) • 6 to 9 credit hours $3000 (before May 1) • If you take ICPSR courses and SRC courses, you will pay full fees to both programs.
Institute on Qualitative and Multimethod Research • Syracuse University • May 25 – June 10, 2009 • Competitive applications • UF has 2 slots, already filled for 2009 • Applications to Grad Coordinator in the form of a two page statement describing how the program will enhance your research program • Late fall for 2010 program
Institute on Qualitative and Multimethod Research • Fixed lecture schedule with variety of faculty on different topics • Readings and assignments sent to participants prior to program • Participants submit 10 page research proposal prior to arrival, which is critiqued • Focus on • epistemology • concept building • research design, esp for dissertation research • critique; especially helpful for small N studies
Recent UF Alumni • Political Science • Jessica Peet (2008) • Upohar Haroon (2008) • Jonathan Jones (2007) • Joe Kraus (2007) • Ani de la Quintana (2006) • Diana Cohen (2006) • Susan Orr (2005) • Melinda Negron (2005)
Topics • research design • concept formation • methods of structured and focused comparisons of cases • typological theory • case selection • process tracing • comparative historical analysis • congruence testing • path dependency • interpretivism • counterfactual analysis • interview and field research (including archival) techniques • necessary and sufficient conditions • fuzzy set methods • philosophy of science
Expenses and Logistics • UF Department pays fee, which includes • tuition • accommodation (eg. Holiday Inn) • stipend for food • Student pays transportation • Some social events
ICPSR Intense 4 or 8 wks Seminar oriented with workshops faculty office hrs homework Open Student pays (with some funding opportunities) More data analysis and formal models oriented More time for social interactions with faculty and students IQRM More Intense 2 weeks, 9-6 everyday Lecture oriented advance readings faculty "fly in" no graded homework Competitive Mostly funded More research design oriented, especially valuable for forming dissertation prospectus Some social interactions Facebook!
