  3. What does it mean to be College and Career Ready? • Our students will leave high school with the knowledge and skills they need for • College • Trade school • Highly skilled job in the 21st century • Confident, self-directed, independent learners

  4. Understanding University Success • 3 year study - 2003 • 400 faculty members & college administrators • Representing 20 prominent universities • Identified skills & knowledge needed by 1st year college student (Knowledge & Skills for University Success)

Habits of Mind Identified by KSUS • Define the successful first year college student as: • Inquisitive • Willing to take risks, accept feedback, learn from mistakes • Skilled in critical thinking • Able to draw inferences, & reach conclusions based on the critical evaluation process • Skilled in supporting their opinions with sound coherent arguments

  6. First Year College Students • Achieve – • A non-profit education organization • Created by the Governors Association • Report by 300 two- and four-year professors who taught first year college students

  7. 70% say students do not comprehend complex text • 66% say student cannot think analytically • 65% say students lack appropriate work and study habits • 62% say students write poorly • 59% say students do not know how to do research • 55% say students cannot apply what they have learned

Common Core State Standards • National k-12 standards • What students need to be able to do for success in college and career • Emphasize critical thinking with strong foundation in literacy and math • These standards build from elementary to end of high school (backwards design) • Developed by the National Governors Association

Florida Transitions toCommon Core State Standards • CCSS • Standards-based instruction facilitated by learning goals • Big ideas and learning goals guide the development of curriculum maps • Learning progressions or scales describe expectations for student progress in attaining the learning goals • Assessments used to monitor student progressare aligned directly to the learning progressions or scales • Teaching big ideas narrows the focus and allows students to delve deeper for a greater depth of understanding NGSSS • Standards-based instruction • Test item specifications guide development of curriculum maps • Focus mini-assessments aligned to individual benchmarks and used to monitor student progress • Teaching benchmarks in isolation results in long lists of tasks to master • CCSS
