4. REVALIDA • The revalida is the final examination required for the degree of Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.) at the University of Santo Tomas

5. OBJECTIVES • To ascertain that the certain candidate possesses the minimum knowledge, skills and attitudes required of a physician • To assess if the following objectives of education at the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery have been fulfilled:

OBJECTIVES • Formation of a physician who is competent in the art and science of medicine with the necessary background to become a basic physician and/or postgraduate training in any of the specialties in medicine • Formation of a physician who is aware of and responsive to the health and medical needs of the Filipino and society. • Formation of a physician who is conscious of the religious and moral obligations of a Catholic Physician.

7. PARTS • The revalida is composed of two parts: the first and second exercises – which are given successively to eligible medical clerks.

8. THE FIRST EXERCISE • The written Revalida and the first oral examination constitute the first exercise.

9. COMPREHENSIVE WRITTEN EXAMINATION SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES • The written examination is comprehensive, integrating the basic and clinical disciplines with questions that test the candidates’ stock of medical information and their ability to analyze and solve medical problems. It is administered once a year. • The passing grade for the written revalida is 75%. Students who pass the written examination are exempted from the 1st oral exercise

10. REQUIREMENTS FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR ORAL EXERCISES • To qualify for the oral exercise, the medical senior must have completed ten (10) months of Clerkship with satisfactory grades for those who enrolled in April (Regular); twelve (12) months of clerkship with satisfactory grades for those who enrolled after April 16 (Irregular). They must have:

11. No incomplete/failing grades in any service; no repeat service. • No deficiencies (April 16 – February 14); a maximum of (3) days of unexcused or (9) days of excused absences is allowed. Any absences/demerits in excess must be made up prior to the revalida. • No suspension in effect at the time of the Revalida. • Clearance from the Treasurer’s Office.

12. FIRST ORAL EXERCISE SCOPE AND PROCEDURE • The first Oral Exercise is taken by all medical clerks who fail the written revalida. It is based on a question/response format using suggested topics/modules provided to the tribunals.

13. To ensures similar difficulty levels, the same general questions are asked of all three clerks assigned to a tribunal. Clerks are prohibited from conferring with each other during the First Exercise particularly after a candidate has finished the 1st exercise and others have yet to take the same. • A candidate must satisfactorily answer a minimum of 65% of the questions asked to obtain the equivalent passing grade of 75%. Those who fail to attain the minimum passing score are not allowed to proceed to the 2nd exercise.

15. GRADING • The performance of the candidate is rated as “Pass” or “Fail” by each member of the tribunal. These ratings are reflected by the letters “P” and “F”. • The grade obtained indicates the following: • PASSED: 3 P’s – Candidate qualifies for the second oral exercise;

FAILED: 1F – Candidate must make-up two additional months in clerkship 2F’s – three Months make-up in Clerkship 3F’s – four months make-up in clerkship • All make-up rotations are accomplished in the ward/s specified by the tribunal. If no department is specified, the Office of Clinical Programs will give the assignment. • The student must take the first oral examination again after completion of the specified make-up.

17. SECOND ORAL EXERCISE • To qualify the second exercise, the student must: • Pass the comprehensive written exercise with a grade of 75% or higher thereby exempting him/her from the first oral exercise, or • Pass the first oral exercise with the grade of 3 P’s (PASSED)

19. SCOPE The second exercise requires the student to: • Examine a patient at the STUH Clinical Division, diagnose the case and present an appropriate plan of investigation and therapy. These must be presented and adequately discussed before the tribunal, then formally submitted as part of the student’s expediente. • Discuss fully and satisfactorily a medical or surgical emergency.

20. TRIBUNALS • The students are assigned to each tribunal for oral examination. The assignment to tribunals is by lottery, held in the presence of the University Registrar, Dean, Assistant Dean, Faculty Secretary, Director of Clinical Programs and the officers of the graduating class and/or their representative. • Each tribunal is composed of 3 faculty members from the basic, medical and surgical disciplines.

21. TRIBUNALS • All bona fide faculty members of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, tenured or non-tenured, are assigned to these tribunals as part of their academic responsibilities. • After drawing of tribunal the list is posted by the Office of Clinical Programs and each member of the tribunal is given a copy.

22. SPECIAL CONDITIONS • A student who finishes clerkship must take the Revalida within two years. Those who fail to do so will be required to repeat medical clerkship. • If more than 4 years have passed after completion of clerkship, a medical clerk who applies for the oral revalida must:

SPECIAL CONDITIONS • Satisfactorily explain the reason/s for the protracted delay in a letter of appeal to the Dean; • Pass a qualifying exam for clerkship to be given by the Department of Medical Education; • Repeat the entire clinical clerkship; • Take the written revalida to be administered during his clerkship.
