Taxes are withheld at the source (TDS) from a variety of revenue streams, including bank deposit interest, business profits, salaries, and property sales. A percentage of the tax liability is subtracted by the paying entity and credited to the taxpayer's tax account. There are, however, some circumstances in which the taxpayer's records might not show this TDS credit right away. This could happen for several reasons, including inconsistencies in the facts or the payer failing to deposit TDS with the government. Form 26AS contains comprehensive information on missing TDS details.
