  1. Energy Efficient Elevators A summary of “Green” facts – November 2010

  2. An Elevator’s Life The biggest impact an elevator has during its life is the use phase, therefore, the largest potential for efficiency improvement is in the built environment. Understanding the largest potential for elevator efficiency lies in the energy it uses to operate it is essential that we encourage and educate our customers on the benefits of keeping their equipment as up-to-date as possible. Material we purchase Products we Make Elevators have a 3x greater impact during operation Our Fleet

  3. The Issue – Background Facts and Figures Elevators consume a significant part (2-3%) of all electricity in the world Pre-90’s Elevators (5% to 8%) • Four key issues • Rising energy prices • Security of energy supply • Climate change • Economic growth Total building electricity consumption Energy efficient elevators Energy efficient elevator solutions help in tackling the global energy and climate change challenge

  4. The Issue – More background Facts and Figures • There has been an evolution in elevator technology during the past 10 to15 years. Modernizing older elevator machines or controllers to the latest technology will bring huge savings in energy costs and CO2 emissions. • Approximately2/3of all elevators currently installed in the world are utilizing older, less energy efficient technology (developed before 1980). • Thecurrent changeover rate to new elevator technologies is simply too slow. • TKE converts Vintage Motor generator sets/controllers at a rate of 0.8% per year.

  5. The Issue – Background Facts and Figures, Global Energy and Climate Change • Buildings account for 42% of the worlds energy consumption (WRI) • And 15% of the worlds GHG output • Old elevators (pre 1990) consume up to 8% of the total building energy • Old MG (motor generator) sets are dusty (carbon brushes), inefficient and generate excess heat • New elevators are 50% more energy efficient, and reduce machine room heat by 45% • Retrofits to old elevators can reduce energy demand by 50% to 70% • Relatively short pay back with energy savings, tax credits and utility rebates

  6. Trends Leading to Retrofits 22 yrs. • What identifies a product as green? • Energy efficiency (84%) • Improved health/well being (72%) • Recyclability/recycled content (70%) Green Building Market Opportunity Percent expected to at least double over next five years Percent of green market increased five fold between 2005 and 2008 $56 billion 20+% of market $24 billion 10+% of market $3 billion 2% of market 2005 2008 2013 • Median age of office buildings @ 22 yrs. are ripe for modernizations • 50% of installed units are at least 20 years old

  7. Energy Efficient Elevator Solutions For each market segment below, an energy efficient elevator solution already exists with a potential 50% savings or more… Up to 70% Up to 50% Up to 94% Up to 87% Up to 88% * Based on a 10 stop elevator with a office traffic pattern

  8. Modernization Approaches for energy efficiency improvements Old MG set including old lighting, controller and DC hoist motor New AC motor and/or machine New Controller & drive New lighting & controls New system including controls System Energy Usage Efficient (green) Inefficient (red) • Elevator systems can be improved to become more efficient • The maximum effect is realized through new systems including controls

  9. Case Study – Federal Building (superior performance with energy savings of 74%) Summary The elevator system at the Fritz G. Lanham Federal Building in Fort Worth, Texas, was modernized with the ThyssenKrupp Elevator 10K Drive system. Within one year, the modernization resulted in savings of approximately $20,000 . ** Based on 10 hours of elevator operation per day for 30 days.

  10. Example: Hotel/Casino Project – passenger and service elevators Original Equipment on the Project included: T2 logic controllers, motor generators and DC hoist motors • 40 Elevators (24 Passenger /16 Service) • 18new 380 Gearless A/C Machines • Retained 22 existing GD240 Geared Machines, new AC Motors • New Tac50M Controllers with Regenerative Drives • New HDLM Door Operators and Associated Car and Hall Components • New Hall Fixtures

  11. Geared 350 FPM Actual Energy Savings Existing New Machine: GD240Geared Controller: T2 Logic Motor Generator: YES Hoist Motor: DC Machine: Retained existing GD240 Controller: TAC 50M MG: NO – Upgraded to 10K Drive Hoist Motor: AC • Annual Savings: • On-Peak kWh …………….. 9,112 • Non on-peak kWh……….. 93,334 Benefits • Electricity: • 93,334 kWh x $0.11/kWh • => $10,267 annually • 60%+ energy savings • 30% Improved performance • 100 ft2 of space saved per elevator • 100% elimination of carbon dust • Cleaner, healthier, safer and better for the environment

  12. Gearless under 500 fpm Actual Energy Savings Existing New Machine: New AC gearless DAB 380 machine Controller: TAC 50M MG: NO – Upgraded to PWM Drive Hoist Motor: AC Machine: Dover G3A Controller: T2 Logic Motor Generator: YES Hoist Motor: DC • Annual Savings: • On-Peak kWh ………….…15,013 • non on-peak kWh……… 157,052 Benefits • Electricity: • 157,052 kWh x $0.11/kWh • => $17,276 annually • 70%+ energy savings • 30% Improved performance • 100 ft2 of space saved per elevator • 100% elimination of carbon dust • No fluid leaks • Cleaner, healthier, safer and better for the environment
