  1. X-rays P3.1.1

  2. Starter - What do you know about X-rays? • Think-pair-share • Make a spider diagram of all the things you already know about X-rays

  3. Aims • Describe what we use X-rays in hospitals for. • Explain why X-rays are dangerous. • Justify the need for a CT scanner.

  4. Objectives • Using learned knowledge and proper understanding, produce a spider diagram of ideas and uses for Xrays. • Write a paragraph to explain why radiation is dangerous, using key words and information from the video. • Complete the table to compare CT scanners and X-ray machines.

  5. Key words • X-ray • Radiograph • CT scanner • Absorb • Damage • Penetrate • Cell mutation

  6. Question • Why is a crack in a bone visible in an x-ray? • What would it look like? • How come we can only see the bones, not the soft tissue?

  7. Broken bone X-ray

  8. Radiographs (X-ray images) • Read the information about X-rays on the A4 sheet. • Underline all the key words. • Highlight any information about what might show up on an X-ray image.

  9. Task • Draw around your hand. • Draw the parts of the hand that would be visible on an X-ray.

  10. Why is radiation dangerous? • this video shows the radiation being emitted by an X-ray tube. The radio emissions are counted using a Geiger counter. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ9TYCZXzcE

  11. Question • Why does the film badge worn by people who work with radiation have a plastic case, rather than a metal one?

  12. X-ray therapy • X-rays are not just used to produce radiographs of broken bones. • We can also use them to destroy cancerous tumors in the body. Thick plates are placed between the x-ray tube and they body to stop healthy tissues being damaged. A gap between the plates allows the X-rays to reach the tumor.

  13. X-ray therapy

  14. How an X-ray tube works • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc0eOjWkxpU&feature=endscreen

  15. The CT scanner • A computerised tomography scanner makes digital cross sections of the body and can be used to make 3d constructions of organs.

  16. The CT scanner

  17. Task • Complete the table, using the information you have learned during the lesson.

  18. Peer marking

  19. Peer marking

  20. Question • Which do you think gives a higher dose of radiation? • The CT scanner or the X-ray machine? • Explain your ideas.

  21. Question • When an X-ray is taken, why is it necessary: • To place the patient between the x-ray tube and the film cassette? • To have the film in a light proof cassette? • To shield the parts of the body not under investigation from x-rays? What would happen to the healthy cells?

  22. ..Back to your spider diagram • Using a different colored pen, Add any new ideas you have learned or interesting facts to your spider diagram.
