Art and Science How one affects the other and how both can work together.
An Artists Rendition of The Milky Way • As an Artist my imagination goes wild sometimes. • Science helps fuel my imagination • But I can’t help but wonder how the two can coexist • How does Art affect Science?...and • How does Science affect the Arts?
This is an Artist Rendition of a Star going Supernova • Chances are that none of us will get to see a star going supernova, or live to tell about it • But an Artist working with the knowledge of science can recreate the experience in a much safer display • No Artist prior to the discovery that a scientist made would have ever even known that a supernova could exist.
Gravity can be explained through an equation, but makes more sense when we can see it either through an artist depiction or some sort of physical “see-able” medium like dropping and apple to the ground. • In both of these images an Artist helps to explain gravity through a picture, It has been found that many people learn better through observation rather than written or oral communications.
Science has almost always made a great subject for the movies • Star Wars, Star Trek, Star Gate, BattlestarGalactica, Aliens (1,2, and 3), E.T., Close Encounters, well the list goes on and on. • Here, Artists have used Science and Scientific studies to create bizarre and entertaining theatrical drama that continue to inspire and show us what outer space and other realms might be like.
So does this mean that you have to pick one or the other…? Of course not! • It has been said that a person is either “left” or “right” “brained”. • Science has recently made it obvious this statement is not only false but hurtful. • People will say “Oh, I can’t draw because I’m right brained” or “I can’t do math because I’m “left brained”. NOT TRUE! • Even if you believe the left/right brain theories it stands to argue that a left brain person can be quite good at drawing or creating art.
Black Peacock, 1950 ALEXANDER CALDER It’s hard to believe that a work of abstract art might have actually affected the history of science. Cubism seems to have nothing in common with modern physics. When we think about the scientific process, a specific vocabulary comes to mind: objectivity, experiments, facts. In the passive tense of the scientific paper, we imagine a perfect reflection of the real world. Paintings can be profound, but they are always pretend. This view of science as the sole mediator of everything depends upon one unstated assumption: While art cycles with the fashions, scientific knowledge is a linear ascent. The history of science is supposed to obey a simple equation: Time plus data equals understanding. One day, we believe, science will solve everything. But the trajectory of science has proven to be a little more complicated. The more we know about reality—about its quantum mechanics and neural origins—the more palpable its paradoxes become. As Vladimir Nabokov, the novelist and lepidopterist, once put it, “The greater one’s science, the deeper the sense of mystery.”
There is a saying that someday science fiction will become science fact. • The sometimes abstract and bizarre thoughts and imaginations of an artist can become a reality! • Take Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings of parachutes, tanks, helicopters, dirigibles, and horse-less carriages. • These were ideas created by an artist hundreds of years before they were made.
It seems that when the genius of the scientist combines with the genius of the artist almost anything can be created, our greatest fantasies can come true. These next few slides will be images of works of art that combine Art and Science. One of the greatest and useful inventions has been the car. Artist/Designers and Engineers are always working together to come up with “cooler”, safer, economical, and aesthetically pleasing vehicles for people to buy. Concept Cars are fun to look at, though not always available to the public.
This Concept Motorcycle actually drives! I don’t think this vehicle even exist (yet), but I want one! This Skycar is real and flies! Why don’t we all have these!?
Scientists/Archaeologists have shown us the existence of dinosaurs, while artists recreate these great prehistoric beasts, bringing them to life.
Computer generated images (CGI) are a relatively new medium to the art world so much so that some artists refuse to call CGI an art form!? But the artists and designers that work on projects that involve CGI movies, video games, and images have been a growing community and it has established itself as a multi-billion dollar a year industry.
Its has been said that we are no longer in the Contemporary age of art but have begun a new age since the 80’s. • What this age is called we have yet to determine. • I believe that we have entered into an age of art, that can best be described as the “Digital Art Era.”
