Awareness of sensibilities • Ceremony is voluntary • Inclusive to welcome all engineers into the profession • There are some religious references to a higher power • These references are allegorical; think of them in a way that you are comfortable in your beliefs • Not gender neutral
History • January 25 1922 in Montreal • Professor Herbert Haultain • U of T Mining • Was Addressing the 36th Annual Professional meeting of the Engineering Institute of Canada • Suggested the development of a tribal spirit among engineers
History • Dr J.M.R. Fairbairn • Chief Engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway • Suggests to Haultain that he contacts Rudyard Kipling on the subject • On October 18th, 1922, Haultain writes Kipling • November 9th Kipling responded.

Symbols of the Ceremony • Symbolize the engineer’s bond to the material of his work • Reminder of perversity of inanimate things • Property of materials • Their point of failure • Duty of the engineer to protect the public from his creations • Reminder of the breaking limit and capacity for failure in the engineer
Oath vs Obligation • Oath is a promise to oneself • Obligation is a duty to an organization or profession
The Ring • In the face of possible difficulty and danger the ring is a reminder to neither abandon your calling nor advance too soon. • Quote from Kipling in letter to Fairbairn in 1925
