  1. DO’s AND DON’Ts IN THE EMPLOYMENT CHASE THINKING THROUGH & ATTENDING TO DETAILS Michael Piczak August 2004

  2. THE PLAN • Be professional • Be credible • Realize you have skills and a contribution to make • Realize you have needs and wants too ($, benefits, experience, access to training, entry to desirable firm, promotion potential) • Realize the employer is anxious too (to fill the position) • Realize you have options • Realize you are not desperate • Win the job you want on your terms

  3. BEING PROFESSIONAL/CREDIBLE • Think about why you really want this job • Appearance, conduct • Resume that informs, not distort/exaggerate • Being on time • Having done your research • Being prepared (thinking through situational or behaviorally driven questions) • Having rehearsed • Having your own questions for the employer • Being prepared to negotiate within limits

  4. AVOID • Wrong telephone number/contact information • Tiping mistakes • E-mail that does not work, full e-mail box • Attaching resumes to body of e-mail • Writing in e-mail slang, colloquial e-talk, street talk • “like” as in…”Like I want this job, like…like I need it, like…” • Gaps in resume • Quick succession of jobs • Being late • Using references that have not been cleared • Raising the money/benefits issue yourself • Bad mouthing previous employers or people in the industry • Reference contact info that does not work

  5. BE READY FOR • “What do you consider your greatest weakness?” • “Do you have any questions?” • “Is there anything else I should know about you?” • “Why do you really want this job?” • “What do you do for outside interests?” • “How do you think you can help us?” • “What do you really bring to this job?” • “Tell me about a time when…you broke with company policy…you had a disagreement with your boss…had to deal with an unhappy customer….what did you do?”

  6. DO’s AND DON’Ts IN THE EMPLOYMENT CHASE A True Story Based on a Recent SB Graduate Experience Michael Piczak August 2004 THE END
