COURSE OBJECTIVE • The objective of this course is to introduce the students the types of economic integrations and to analyze the effects of economic integration on integrating countries. • International Economic Integration is the institutional combination of seperate national economies into larger economic blocks or communities, in order to promote efficiency in resource use on a regional basis.
ASSESSMENT • Midterm Exam : 50 % • Term Paper and Presentation : 50 % • Total : 100 %
RESEARCH TOPICS Only suggestions not limited to these subjects! • Understanding Globalization • Why globalization accelarated after 1990’s? (3 students) • Do globalization and economic integrations contradict? (3 students) • Why some economic integrations fail? (3 students) • Effects of globalization on income inequality (3 students) • North American Free Trade Area • Effects on trade and employment (3 students) • Why FTA but not CU? (3 students)
RESEARCH TOPICS Only suggestions not limited to these subjects! • European Union • Understanding EU (2 students) • Trade effects (2 students) • Capital and labor movements (2 students) • Monetary union (2 students) • Maastrich criteria (2 students) • Common Agriculture Policy; Regional policies etc. (3 students) • Turkey’s Economic Integration Efforts • Understanding Turkey’s relations with EU (2 students) • Effects of CU with EU on Turkey’s trade (2 students) • Harmonization of economic policies or regulations (3 students) • Turkey’s other integration efforts like Black Sea Economic Cooperation etc. (2 students)
RESEARCH Groups • Each week 2 groups will present their papers. • Students must send to the lecturer (pinar.emirhan@deu.edu.tr) their powerpoint presentations at least 3 days prior to their presentations, otherwise 5 points will be deducted from their presentation grades. • The deadline for paper submission is May 23, 2011. • Papers will be submitted in both printed form and in a CD. (All papers will be uploaded to TURNITIN.)
