Fellowships • 1 year posts offered by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) • Opportunity to develop special interest and exposure to different options for future career • 3 currently available: • Medical Education • Health Inequalities • Remote and rural • Academic – employed by University rather than NES

  3. Important Info! • Salary – ST4 with 45% supplement • Study Budget - £1,000 • 6 weeks annual leave pro rata • Advertised now! • Closing date Friday 12th February • Interviews March

  4. Medical Education Fellowship • 4 posts at 0.5 wte (1 in each Deanery – East, West, North and South East) • 5 sessions • No clinical work – own responsibility • Encouraged to work towards postgraduate medical education qualification • Involved in Postgraduate teaching • Research or project

  5. Typical working week – Medical Education

  6. Pros Enhanced CV Flexible Qualification +/- publication/poster New/different skills Job for a year Variety Cons Unstructured Juggling different commitments Need to be motivated for PGCertMedEd

  7. Health Inequalities Fellowship • 3 posts (1 wte West, 0.5 wte South East, 0.5 wte East) • ‘Introduction to the challenges of delivering primary care to a deprived population’ • 5 sessions – mixture of academic and clinical • Clinical sessions (2 or 3) in GP practice in deprived area • Encouraged to pursue postgraduate qualification and/or research project

  9. Pros Job for a year Clinical work involved to keep skills up Flexible Cons Unstructured No other health inequality work so isolated

  10. Remote and Rural Fellowship • 11 posts this year (1 part time) • Borders, Aberfeldy, Auchterarder, Arran, Orkney, Wigtonshire, Skye • Work and live in remote countryside • Develop skills in remote and rural general practice • 6 months service & 6 months education • Enhanced study budget

  11. Pros Job for a year Generous study leave & budget Chance to work and live in remote countryside Opportunity to see a lot of pathology Cons A lot of travelling between remote places Can be very remote – only doctor on call 24/7 Not suitable for people with family

  12. Academic Fellowship • Employed by University • Combines clinical work with teaching, research and management • Teaching – curriculum development, assessment • Research in area of interest, publications • Networking!

  14. Pros Variety – no week the same Stimulating Flexible Potential to influence future practice via research Cons Often require working evenings & weekends to get work finished Need to be motivated and self-disciplined Lonely
