Lime-Cement Columns: Mix Design and Laboratory Testing • Introductory comments • Problems at I-95/Route 1 interchange • Scope of this research • Factors influencing LCC mixtures
Lime-Cement Columns • Adding lime and cement to clay reduces compressibility and increases strength • No spoil • Equipment designed for soft ground • Less expensive than “wet” deep soil mixing, jet grouting, or drilled shafts • More expensive but faster than surcharging with wick drains
LCC Applications for Embankments on Soft Ground • Reduces settlement • Increases stability • Reduces the bump at the end of the bridge • Especially applicable for widening existing embankments on soft ground to reduce differential settlement between old and new embankment
Problems at I-95/Route 1 • Different results for laboratory tests performed by two engineering consulting firms • Poor performance of LCC test columns in a highly organic zone
Scope of this Research Project • Literature review • Detailed review of I-95/Route 1 • Interview international experts • Perform laboratory test program onI-95/Route 1 soil • Develop recommended laboratory test protocol • Apply recommended protocol to West Point soil
Some Factors Influencing the Performance of LCC Mixtures • Soil characteristics • Soil particle size distribution • Soil mineralogy • Amount and type of organics • Soil water content • Soil water chemistry
Some Factors Influencing the Performance of LCC Mixtures • Admixtures • Lime type, hydration, and amount • Cement type and amount • Mixing • Method • Energy • Duration • Compaction into mold
Some Factors Influencing the Performance of LCC Mixtures • Curing • Time • Temperature • Humidity • Confining pressure • Nature of loading • Stress state • Loading rate
