Fire Protection – Introduction • In this module you will learn about the fire protection requirements covered in 29 CFR 1910, Subpart L – Fire Protection. • These requirements cover the following fire protection areas: • Fire brigades • Portable and fixed fire suppression equipment • Fire detection systems • Fire and employee alarm systems installed. • The rules addressed apply to all employment except maritime, construction, and agricultural jobs. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

Objectives • At the end of this module, you should be able to: • Identify the need for establishing and the requirements for maintaining a fire brigade • Identify requirements for automatic sprinkler, standpipe, and hose systems • Identify requirements for fire detection and employee alarm systems. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

Fire Protection – Fire Brigades • This Fire Brigade section contains requirements for the organization, training, and personal protective equipment for fire brigades. • These requirements apply to fire brigades whenever they are established by an employer. • The requirements of §1910.156 apply to fire brigades, industrial fire departments, private or contractual fire departments, and all portable and fixed fire suppression equipment. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

Fire Protection – Fire Brigades • §1910.156 does not apply to airport crash rescue or forest fire fighting operations. • The discussion in this section is limited to the requirements that apply to fire brigades. • It should be noted that this regulation does not require an employer to establish fire brigades. • If they are established, the requirements must be met. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

Organization • If a fire brigade is developed, the employer shall prepare and maintain a written policy statement which: • Establishes the fire brigade and its organizational structure • Defines the functions to be performed • States training program requirements. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

Organization • The employer must ensure that employees who are expected to do interior structural fire fighting are trained and physically capable of performing duties which may be assigned to them during emergencies. • Interior structural fire fighting is the physical activity of fire suppression, rescue, or both, inside of buildings or enclosed structures which are involved in a fire situation beyond the incipient stage. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

Training and Education • Training shall be conducted prior to assignment and at least annually for all fire brigade members. • Quarterly training or education sessions are required for those fire brigade members expected to perform interior structural fire fighting. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

Training and Education • Some sources of qualified training instructors are: • The local fire department • The state fire marshal's office • The state university extension service • The International Society of Fire Service Instructors • Community college fire science programs. © 2003 Seton Identification Products

  11. Fire Fighting Equipment • The employer shall maintain equipment as needed. All fire fighting equipment must be inspected at least annually to ensure safe operational condition of the equipment. • Maintenance and inspection is important to ensure fire-fighting equipment, protective clothing, and protection devices are in proper working order when needed. © 2003 Seton Identification Products
