  1. World Geo Intro to essential vocab

  2. What is geography? • The study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on Earth.

  3. Study of Geography • Maps - most common method to study the use of space on Earth. • Representations of portions of the earth. • Photographs - geographers use photos for visual evidence about a place. • Charts, graphs, and tables are used to study patterns. • FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

  4. Theme: Location • Location can be described by absolute or relative location. • Absolute - exact place where a geographic feature is found. • Can you name an example? • Relative - describes a place in relation to other places around it. • How would you describe W.T.W.?

  5. Absolute Location • 25W, 140S

  6. Theme: Location • Absolute location uses a grid system of imaginary lines. • Earth is divided into two equal halves, each half is called a hemisphere. • The Equator is the imaginary line that divides the north and south halves. • The Prime meridian is the line that divides the earth east and west.

  7. Hemisphere

  8. Equator

  9. Prime Meridian

  10. Latitude • Run parallel to the equator • Also called parallels!

  11. Longitude • Go around the earth’s poles. • AKA Meridians

  12. CAN EACH SITE ON EARTH HAVE MORE THAN ONE ABSOLUTE LOCATION?

  13. Theme: Place • Place includes the physical features and cultural landscape of a location. • All locations on earth have physical features that set them apart. • EX: climate, landforms, and vegetation. Can be human interactions such as roads or houses. • ***Place can change because cultures change***

  14. Place

  15. Theme: Region • Formal Regions - limited number of characteristics. Usually defined by continental areas and similar cultural styles. • EX: Africa, The US and Canada, Latin America….

  16. Theme: Region • A functional region is organized around a set of interactions and connections between places. • A hub is a central place with many links to outlying areas. • EX: A city and its suburbs. • EX: Dallas and Plano

  17. Region

  18. Theme: Human-Environment Interaction • People learn to use what the environment offers them. • EX??? • They may change the environment to meet their needs! • MODIFICATION!

  19. Modification

  20. THEME: MOVEMENT • Geographers study movement by looking at three types of distance: • Linear • How far across the earth an idea, product, or person travels. • Time • How long it takes a person, product, or idea to travel. • Psychological • The way people view distance. • EX: if you are familiar with a place, it may seem closer.

  21. Geographer’s Tools • Globe - a 3-d representation of the earth • Map - 2-d representation of selected parts of the earth’s surface • Cartographer - a map maker
