  1. HOLD FAST unto YOUR CONFIDENCE UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXT OF THE THEME VERSE – HEBREWS 10:35

  2. LESSON OBJECTIVES • At the end of this presentation, we should be able to: • Identify the operational elements of the King James version of our theme verse • Understand the theme verse well enough to explain it to a third party off the top of your head

  3. HEBREWS 10:35 • Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. (KJV) • Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. (NKJV) • So do not give up your hope which will be greatly rewarded. (BBE) • So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded (NIV) • Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. (RSV)

  4. THE ENlightening VERSES • Hebrews 10:32-34 • ‘... A great fight of afflictions’ • ‘fight’ as in contention, combat, struggle • Kinds of afflictions: • Reproaches • Necessities • Persecutions • Distresses • Summary of afflictions – SHAME,PAIN,LOSS

  5. OPERATIONAL ELEMENTS • ‘Therefore’ • ‘Confidence’ • ‘Cast not away’ • ‘Great recompense of reward’

  6. ‘THEREFORE’ • The word ‘therefore’ plays a linkage function. • It is a reference to the great struggles of the believers and their sympathy for him (Paul) with the aim of encouraging the suffering believers to hold on fast to their confidence

  7. ‘CONFIDENCE’ • Nearest translation – ‘boldness’ • Also ‘hope’ • ‘Boldness’ as the entitlement of the believer, giving us access to the throne of grace. • Our ‘shield of faith’ • The believer's confidence is in Christ!

  8. ‘CAST NOT AWAY’ • ‘Hold on fast’, ‘Do not throw away’ • To hold or to cast away is down to the believer! • The use of the phrase ‘cast not away’ was perhaps a reference to cowardly soldiers • The tradition of the Spartan women: ‘Either bring this back, or be brought back on it’ • Can God ask less?

  9. SHIPWRECK OF CONFIDENCE • Shifting from confidence in God to confidence in man • Giving in to sin • Getting involved in worldly company • ‘Glory Swap’ – shifting our aim from seeking the glory of God to concern about our image and our own glory

  10. ‘GREAT RECOMPENSE OF REWARD’ • An appeal to the business sense of the believers by the introduction of the benefits element • Note that the reward is for those who persevere • Whatever happened to heaven?

  11. CONCLUSION • How to hold fast unto your confidence • The Great Reward
