In this course I learned the importance of teaching according to Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). Using TPACK helped me understand that I can use technology to support my teaching and the presentation of my content to my students. I can use technological pedagogical knowledge in my music subject and teach students aural training using computers and internet sites. I can use technological content knowledge to support my research of my teaching subjects through the use of laptops, computers, and the internet. TPACK supports learning and research in schools and enhances the quality of the content that is given to the students. echnological edagogical nd ontent nowledge
TECHNOLOGY Throughout this course I have learned the important role technology plays in enhancing student learning. Technology allows teachers to teach in lots of different ways to cater for any diversity in a classroom. The use of technology is one of the 21st century skills students will learn in their education. In this course I used a range of technology such as laptops, flip cameras, microphones, search engines and internet sites and learned how they can enhance student’s learning.
21st Century Skills Critical Thinking Creativity The use of technology Communication Before this course I thought I had a lot of knowledge of technology. I was content with using just Facebook and YouTube. But now after starting this course I realise how little I actually knew about technology. I have learned numerous ways to enhance student’s learning through technology and have learned how technology can help develop all the necessary skills that our 21st century students require. The 21st century skills are collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity and use of technology. Collaboration
Communication Collaboration Communication is an important tool for students to learn. Social networking sites such as facebook, twitter and youtube can be used to help develop student’s communication skills. These sites allow students to communicate and collaborate with people from all around the world and allows them to share their ideas. Skype a social networking tool can be used to talk to people face to face through the use of webcams and microphones. Communication is important because it allows people to convey their feelings and create good connections with future co-workers or employers. Before students finish school they should know how to use technology to collaborate with others in order to succeed in their future careers. A blog is one way students can collaborate and share their ideas with people around the world. Blog sites such as edublogs, tumblr and blogger are easy, free online tools students can use to collaborate with others. Scoop it, is an online tool that teachers can use to create a collaborative atmosphere. It allows teachers to put the content that they want their students to learn into the site. This allows students to collaborate with other students and the teacher through questioning and critically analysing the content.
Creativity Critical thinking In this course I created a video, digital story, spread sheet and a podcast. I used PowerPoint, Excel, mind maps (e.g. bubbl.us), windows movie maker and audacity to create these tasks. The main 21st century skills I used in these tasks were creativity and critical thinking. The benefits for students to create these tasks are that they will enhance their numeracy and literacy skills. Students become literate as they develop knowledge and skills through listening, reading, viewing, writing and creating visual and digital texts (ACARA 2011, ¶ 3). Students become more numerate when they view mathematics in different ways and create different visual representations of mathematics such as graphs (ACARA 2011, ¶ 7). Exercising creativity and critical thinking in different ways will help students succeed in their future careers and create better opportunities for our future generations.
Technology can cater for diversity Technology can cater for diversity. Schools can use a range of modified technology to allow students with a diversity to benefit from technology and enhance their learning. Modified computer keyboards and mice can help students who do not have good fine motor skills. The app on the Ipad “Proloquo2Go” will help students who cannot verbally communicate with others.
Project Based Learning • BLOOM’S TAXONMONY Project Based learning (PBL) should be incorporated in all subjects in schools. It allows students to deepen their knowledge of how to solve real-world problems that capture their interests through acquiring information and apply new knowledge in a problem-solving context (ACES 2010, ¶ 1). In order for students to gain the full benefits of PBL it should be incorporated with technology. Incorporating technology with PBL is essential for students as the primary users of technology to develop higher order thinking skills as we see in the chart of Bloom’s Taxonomy (ACEC 2012, ¶ 1).
This course has improved my knowledge of technology and has shown me how to implement it in my future teaching to enhance student learning. I have enjoyed this course and I thank Wayne Lang and Danielle Pritchard for teaching and helping me in my journey to becoming successful teacher.
