Employability Rankings & Ratings: Delving Deeper • DLHE Reporting • (Destination of Leaver from Higher Education) • Required to collect data based upon UK & EU graduates • Data collected six months after graduation • The 2016/17 cohort, was the last DLHE survey collection • Data can be somewhat misleading for small courses or where very low participation rates • Figures normally cited in relation to those in graduate employment or continuing their studies • e.g. 96% in work or study (Newcastle University 2016/17)
Employability Rankings & Ratings: Delving Deeper • GOS • (Graduate Outcomes Survey) • Successor to DLHE • Conducted by all UK higher education providers. • All graduates who completed a higher education course in the UK after August 2017 will be asked to take part in the survey 15 months after they finish their studies. • The first survey of graduates planned started in December 2018 • First GOS data to be published in spring 2020.

Employability Rankings & Ratings: Delving Deeper • Longitudinal Outcomes Survey • UK Government initiative • First launched in 2016 • (LEO) data brings together: • higher education information from the Department for Education (DfE) • employment, benefits and earnings information from: • the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) • Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) • These experimental statistics use LEO data to look at employment and earnings of higher education graduates 1, 3, 5 and 10 years after graduation • Can compare universities and across subjects
Employability Rankings & Ratings: Delving Deeper • UniStats • Unistats is an independent website offering a range of useful info and statistics on university courses • Useful tool to compare universities and courses • Draws employability data down from DLHE
Course Structures • Industrial Placements / Sandwich Year • Summer Internships • Study Abroad • Many universities offer such opportunities • Some placements attract a paid salary • Can lead to increased exposure, understanding, and performance as well as acquiring skills • See, for example, the University of Bath where all undergraduate course area offer placements
Adding Value • Many universities have opt-in courses separate to your degree subject’s curricula through which you can build up employer-friendly skills and evidence the same. For example: • University of Manchester’s Stellify • University of Newcastle’s Careers Modules • University of Warwick’s myAdvantage • Liverpool John Moores University’s World of Work

Work Options: During Studies • If holding a Tier 4 visa: • 20 hours term time, full-time outside of term at nearly all HEIs • There is a minimum wage in the UK (reviewed in April each year) • At least £6.15 per hour if 18-20, £7.70 if aged 21-24. • Universities will normally have a function to help you find part-time, weekend or vacation work e.g. Unitemps at the University of Nottingham or Career Connect at the University of Sheffield or StudentJob at the University of Aberdeen • Internships • Placements • Part-time work • Summer work • Project Work (dissertation) • Volunteering

Work Options in the UK: After Graduation Tier 2: visa for workers with a skilled job Switch in the UK, Tier 4 > Tier 2 Visa issued for up to 5 years Employer must be on the sponsor register (30,000 in the UK) The job must be of a particular skill level The job must be of a particular salary Minimum salary threshold. Normally £20,800 (or circa $27,899 or 100,000 AED)
