Sociological Theory of Deviance • The anomie theory could be a valid theory to explain why Glen Godwin has turned to deviant and criminal behavior. The anomie theory says that the subject becomes deviant when there is a strain between culturally-defined goals and legitimate opportunities to reach them. From various reports, we know that Glen and an accomplice had robbed and murdered the pilot Kim LeValley because they needed money. Obviously they couldn’t get the money through legitimate means, so they turned to organized crime to get this money. • The drug trafficking part of Glen’s crimes is still anomie theory. It’s a way for him to make money since he doesn’t have any legitimate opportunities after being in jail and being an American fugitive. The drug trafficking business could be an illegal but quick and easy way for someone like him who has no opportunities to make money and try to meet culturally-defined goals.
Deterrence or Rehabilitation? • I believe that Glen should be rehabilitated rather than used as a deterrent. All of the deviant things that Glen has done are a form of getting money to meet societal standards. If all that he needs is money and opportunities, then I think that with the right rehabilitation services such as a job skills course or an education course where he could get skills needed to be on the track to a successful life, Glen could very easily get his life back on the right path and not have to be made an example or be excessively punished for something that can be prevented in the future.
