  2. General Description and Affected Areas • Cystic fibrosis is a disease passed down through families that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other areas of the body. Fuck MArc FUCKING JOE

  3. Parts of Respiratory System Affected • This mucus builds up in the breathing passages of the lungs and in the pancreas, the organ that helps to break down and absorb food. Fuck MArc FUCKING JOE

  4. Cause • Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by a defective gene which causes the body to produce abnormally thick and sticky fluid, called mucus. Fuck MArc FUCKING JOE

  5. Treatment • •Antibiotics • •Inhaled medicines to help open the airways • •DNAse enzyme therapy to thin mucus and make it easier to cough up • •High concentration of salt solutions (hypertonic saline) • •Flu vaccine and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine Fuck MArc FUCKING JOE

Pharmacology • Antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin [Cipro] and tobramycin [TOBI]) • Bronchodilators (such as albuterol or salmeterol) • Anticholinergics (such as Atrovent) • DNase (such as Pulmozyme) • Mucolytics (such as acetylcysteine) • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (such as Motrin) • Membrane stabilizers (such as cromolyn) • Corticosteroids (such as prednisone, Medrol, or FloventDiskus) Fuck MArc FUCKING JOE

  7. Progression of the Disease • Inflammation, obstruction and infection cause: • Lung Damage then • Lung Scarring then • Poor Lung Function • It progressively gets worse. Fuck MArc FUCKING JOE

  8. Expected Outcomes for Recovery • - Children with CF are generally healthy until adulthood • -Lung disease eventually worsens until the person becomes disabled • Average life expectancy is 37 years Fuck MArc FUCKING JOE
