EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATEINSERVICE DAY OCTOBER 11, 2011 TISDALE, SASK.
AGENDA • CRUCIAL CONVERSATION INTRO • 10-15-10:30 – COFFEE BREAK • EARLY LEARNING PRINCIPLES • 12:00-1:00 – LUNCH • 1:00-1:45 – ROLE • 1:45-200 – Mr. Biesenthal
Stakes are high • Opinions vary • Emotions run strong
Some examples… • Ending a relationship • Talking to a co-worker who behaves offensively or makes suggestive comments • Asking a friend to repay a loan • Critiquing a colleague’s work • Dealing with a rebellious teen • Talking to a co-worker about a personal hygiene problem
Avoid them • Face them and handle them poorly • Face them and handle them well
Share your facts • Tell your story • Ask for others’ paths • Talk tentatively • Encourage testing
Ask to get things rolling • Mirror to confirm feelings • Paraphrase to acknowledge the story • Prime when you’re getting nowhere
WHAT WOULD YOU DO…NOW? You are at a neighbourhood block party. You are making small talk with your somewhat crotchety and always colourful neighbour about his shrinking kidneys when he says. “Speaking of the new fence you’re building…” You end up in a heated debate over placing the new fence-five centimetres one way or the other. 5 cm!! He finishes by threatening you with a lawsuit and you say something about him not knowing the difference between his hind end and his elbow!
