Socialization • A process to which you become familiar and interact with other people • How does a child begin to socialize? • First, learn to connect with family • Then other people around them • From this process children can be expected to learn various social stills by certain ages
18th months • Self-centered children • Only think of own needs and wants, not those of others • Why? • Caregivers begin teaching child that not all needs will be met at once
No! The answer meaning “I have control” • Negativism- doing the opposite of what others want • Reasons include • desire for independence • Frustration- they want to do more then their body will let. They do not have the language skills to always express what they want • Child’s realization of being a separate person- wants to be independent but still wants bond with caregiver
What can we do about negativism? • Give choices: Clean your blocks-turns into which colored block will you put away first? • Redirection- get child’s attention away from the problem • Encourage talking- good for language development and getting child to share emotion
What does being egocentric and negative mean about play? • Knowing this brief background into the emotional world of toddlers, we can begin to understand why they play the way they do
Play with others…or not… • During the early period of being a toddler, the child will not interact with a similar aged child • Instead they engage in PARALLEL PLAY • Which basically means they play beside each other, not together • Be mindful: at this age toddlers do not treat others like people. Instead it is more of an object in their way. • Conflicts could result in screaming, hitting, biting, or hair pulling
Consequences of action • A toddler may understand direct, and immediate consequences to their actions, but not punishment or actions that occur later.

Cooperative Play • Begins with 3 yr olds typically • Play together • Instead of parents directing who child will play with, the child is more likely to pick and choose friends
Imaginative Play • Starts around 18- 24 months • Also known as pretend play, make-believe play, or dramatic play • Child imagines things that might happen but normally has not happen
Manipulative play • Play that involves children building on fitting things together. • Is important as it helps children develop their fine motor skills. • What activities would be manipulative play?
