2. The national capital, New Delhi, has been witnessing a constant and rapid increase in the number of street-dwelling children working and surviving under harsh conditions. A survey conducted a few years back estimated the number of homeless children to be around fifty thousand, a fifth of which were girls. Currently the number is way more. There are a number of reasons why these children end up on the street. Many of them leave their poverty-stricken homes and come to Delhi in search of opportunities and a better life. Some run away from violent and irresponsible guardians while others have been known to be separated from their families without a way to get back. It is quite a sorry sight to see the misery of these children working, earning their livelihoods and living a life of distress and neglect. You will currently find children everywhere on the streets of Delhi NCR - selling something at traffic signals, begging, picking rags or simply putting up with their families in slum dwellings. Young children are mistreated by adults and forced to work, beg and commit crimes. They are also abused physically, verbally and emotionally. More than half the population of street children have been reported to have faced abuse and violence in some form. Most children don’t have ID cards or certificates that deprive them of government schemes that provide basic necessities to minors. India is considered to have the largest population of vulnerable street children in the world. Protection and Rehabilitation of Street Children Many NGOs have started working for these unfortunate children. They work closely with authorities and police to provide much needed relief to these children in different forms. They provide shelter, education, medical checkups and most importantly love and care.
