Background – Primavera … • Primavera ? • All During 2004, Thales synthesized all its Divisions’ programme management processes on the basis of existing methodologies within the Group and international standards. • To support this process, a tool was chosen… Primavera, which is … • a standard market tool widely utilised worldwide • particularly within companies functioning in Project mode • Its parameters are based on accepted business management processes • Acceptance: • First, functional and technical experts accepted Primavera together with its parameters before testing and validating it on pilot schemes • Decided at Group level to utilise this tool and its associated processes within the Divisions
Objective – Process supported by a tool… • Because Programmes are the whole point of reason for our business, the Thales objective is to improve • Anticipation & forecast accuracy • Transparency • Data consistency • The Thales worldwide deployment of Primavera is at the same time • A more demanding application, but also more virtuous, of our process of Program Management • A set of cultural changes • And finally, a tool in the service of the Programme Management • Use of a Thales “Primavera Core Model”
THALES PM PROCESS PRIMAVERA THALES CORE MODEL LAYER PRIMAVERA Why a core model ? • secured fields • set of standard codes • configured layouts • additional tools / functions • data history • simulation • capability to capture “validated” programme situations • Additional reports • Excel • Cognos (finance – workload) • Interface with our BO • cultural changes A need to standardize across regions / entities …
Keep in mind that … • Before looking at the PM process, keep in mind that • Primavera stores all our data in a centralised & shared database • Any modification – at any level - is immediately recorded in the database • With limited undo capabilities • The current situation of our programmes is a “live” one (any change immediately affects the milestones, the cost at completion, the workload, …etc …..)
Disjointed situation No consistent view of schedule, workload and costs Excel … Programme Management tool Costs Artemis P3 MSP Excel … Integrated resource schedule Excel … Schedule(s) Workload Costs Workload Why a Programme Management Process and Tool …Background • An integrated Programme Management process for schedule, workload and costs Target situation
Scope of the Programme Management tool • All the programmes shall be managed within the Programme Management tool. • The functionalities to be used depend on the programme complexity as a minimum: start date – end date, workload, budget, costs • Workload forecast for the unit will be provided by Primavera and shall include: • Business opportunities, Current programmes, Other budgeted activities (PV, bids, warranties) • Primavera is built to meet both Programme Management and Finance needs • The Programme Management tool is the Master for the programme structure • The ERP is the master for actual costs • Every work package has its corresponding cost point in the ERP • EAC are transferred from the PM tool to the ERP • The Contract budget base is under the responsibility of the Programme Manager

The programme team meets around the “live” Primavera schedule and updates it while discussing the issues. Typical duration is ½ to 1 day – depending on the programme size. Other Interface / Tools … • Other Interfaces and Tools • Resource Rate Inflation • A specific resource rate inflation tool to manage inflation rate for labour resources • PM Tools • Tools to aid reporting cycle • Checks Project data compliance to Standard Planning Practices • Automates Primavera Summarisation, Baseline creation for PMBI Reporting • WBS Loader • Load any ERP WBS’s into Primavera • Used for Data / Cost Migration …
