Things to consider: • Always take 100 and 115 first! • Other courses do not necessarily need to be taken in numerical order (with the exception of courses with prerequisites) • Employment- many students work in ECE while completing their programs. • If you want to work, you’ll need a basic 12 units as your first classes • CHDV 100, CHDV 115 are required for entry-level employment in any licensed center • Some employers require the state Child Development Permit, others just require “12 units” CHDV Scheduling & Planning

Things to consider (cont.) • CHDV 105 and CHDV 201, 202, 203, 204 require labs • 105A, 105B, 105C- 3 hours per week of lab placement • CHDV 200 will no longer exist after Spring 2013, will be replaced by CHDV 201, 202, 203, and 204. • 201, 202, 203, 204- 3 hours per week of lab placement for each course • 105 is a fall/spring only • 201 is a fall only, 202/203/204 are spring only • Placements are determined by the department • Labs must be done for appropriate population for your certificate/degree choice • CHDV 105 lecture does not need to be repeated for multiple certificates, only the lab hours. Things to consider (cont). • General Education • Some students want to focus only on their child development units • It is a good idea to consider working on your GE units in conjunction with your CHDV units- this is important for 2 reasons: • Earning your state Child Development Permit (teacher level and higher) requires GE units • AS and transfer require GE • Take English classes required for GE sooner rather than later! • Keep your options open! • GE advising can be completed with the GE counselors: • Dr. Lisa Romain lromain@palomar.edu x2195 • JoAnne Lesser jlesser@palomar.edu x2654 CHDV Scheduling & Planning

We strongly recommend that ALL CHDV students who did not receive individual advising from the CHDV department last semester schedule an advising session: • Jenny Fererro jfererro@palomar.edu or another full-time CHDV faculty member (Diane Studinka, Bob Sasse, Laurel Anderson) CHDV Advising- Important!

Issued by the state of CA • Takes the place of a credential for ECE • Separate from the degrees and certificates issued by Palomar • Required for employment in any state-funded program • Recommended for all students to work towards in addition to their Palomar degrees and certificates • We can provide permit advising and VOC • If you are working towards your certificate/AA from Palomar, you WILL have the classes you need for your Associate Teacher and Teacher Permits Child Development Permit

  20. Associate Teacher Permit • 12 units MUST be: • CHDV 100, CHDV 115, and then 2 programs/curriculum classes. Choose from: CHDV 105, 125, 130, 135, 140, 185 • Experience level: 50 days of 3+ hrs/day in past 2 years • Renewal: • Within 5 years must complete 15 more units towards Teacher Permit • Within 10 years must be able to move to Teacher Permit Child Development Permit

Teacher Permit • 24 units of CHDV (including 12 from Associate Teacher) • 16 units of GE- one class in each: • English/Language Arts (ENG 100, Speech 100) • Math or Science (MATH 56/60+, phys. sci., FCS 185, etc.) • Social Science (PSYC, SOC, HIST, etc.) • Humanities/Fine Arts (Foreign Lang, arts, MCS, etc.) • Experience: 175 days of 3+ hrs/day in past 4 years • Renewal every 5 years – 105 hours of professional growth Child Development Permit

For higher level permits: • Master Teacher Permit • Specialization coursework is fulfilled by classes you need for your Palomar certificate/degree • Adult Supervision units (also needed for Site Supervisor permit)= CHDV 195 • Site Supervisor Permit: • In addition to CHDV 195, you’ll need CHDV 150 and CHDV 155 • Students with bachelor’s degrees can qualify for permits under alternate qualifications • For all permit questions or for advising, see one of the full-time CHDV faculty Child Development Permit

The CHDV Centers on the main campus and at the Escondido site provide quality play-based preschool programs for children ages 18 m-5. • Both sites serve as lab schools for our students and are open for observation and participation. • The Center is open to children of students, faculty, staff, and community members. The Child Development Center is open for observation for Palomar students. • Please follow all observation guidelines, posted on the website. • All CHDV students MUST wear their Palomar-issued Student Activity Card when visiting the center. Students must have signed the Palomar College Child Development Department Statement of Commitment and Confidentiality and have received an orange dot for their ID before visiting. • CHDV instructors can provide more information. All CHDV students MUST wear their Palomar-issued Student Activity Card when visiting the center. • Student ID’s cost $15 and can be purchased at the OSA (SU-202). • Hours: 1/14/13-1/18/13 8:30am-4pm (fewer lines!), open 8am-6pm the first few weeks of the semester • Many benefits to the ID, including free copies, coffee, scantrons, and discounts! Student Activity Card (ID)

  26. CHDV courses require college-level reading and writing skills. ALL courses have numerous written assignments, and all courses require the use of APA 6th ed. formatting. • The Writing Center on campus provides free help with written work, including proofreading, formatting, and tutoring for clarity. • The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) at the Escondido site provides tutoring and study help. • The Disability Resource Center (DRC, formerly DSPS) provides assessment for learning disabilities and provides classroom accommodations for students with various types of learning and physical needs. • The library offers assistance with research and online work. • The Tutoring Center offers general tutoring and study help. • Your instructors are here to help you!   29. The California Early Childhood Mentor Program selects experienced classroom teachers to mentor student teachers taking the CHDV 200-level classes (Supervised Field Experience classes- CHDV 201, 202, 203, 204).  • In addition to a stipend for professional development, Mentors Teachers are paid stipends to use their classrooms as high quality training environments.   • The program recruits teachers who have: • Worked at least 2 years in an early childhood classroom, family child care, or school age before/after school care program • Completed a college early childhood training program that included a supervised teaching course and who are eligible for the Master Teacher level, or above, of the California Child Development Permit.  • Completed a course in adult supervision skills and classroom evaluation (CHDV 195) • Please contact Bob Sasse for more information! bsasse@palomar.edu California Mentor Teacher Program
