Life of Christ • April 1st, 2007 • The Crucifixion of Christ • Dr. Samuel Lamerson • Luke 23: 33-47
THE PLACE OF CRUCIFIXION • Luke 23:33a When they came to the place called The Skull,
Perhaps because the top looked like the top of a skull. Perhaps because there were a number of skulls that had been left there from previous criminals. Why was this called “Skull?”
THE PAIN OF CRUCIFIXION • Luke 23:33b there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.
The condemned man’s clothes' were taken away and used by the guards as a “gratuity.” see Matt. 27:35 The condemned man was only about three feet off of the ground. The Pain was Emotional
The condemned was nailed through the wrist. Jesus has already been beaten and has collapsed under the weight of carrying the cross. Notice esp. Mark 15:21 The Pain was Physical.
21 They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross. Why mention the son’s of Simon? Mark 15:21
Jesus is mocked by almost all who are there. Only the thief in Luke is involved in the crucifixion yet does not mock. Christ feels the pain and awfulness of sin. The Pain was Spiritual
THE NATURE OF CRUCIFIXION • What did the crucifixion really do?
1 Timothy 2:5-6 5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. Mark 10:45 45 "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." The Crucifixion Paid a Price.
2 Corinthians 5:21 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. The Crucifixion is a Substitute
Propitiation- satisfying God’s justice by dealing with sin justly. The Crucifixion is a Propitiation
Romans 3:25-26 [Jesus] whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
