Vijaydashmi, Dasara, Durgotsav,Navratri • Vijayadashami  also known as Dasara, is one of the most important festivals celebrated in various forms, across India. • Dasara/ Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit Dasha-hara meaning "remover of bad fate“. • It is also referred to as Navratri and Durgotsav. www.makemegenius.com Free Science Videos for Kids

Dusshera- Why • It is believed that On this day Lord Rama, a Hindu, killed the great demon Ravana who had abducted Rama's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. • Rama, his brother Lakshmana their follower Hanuman and an army of ninja monkeys fought a great battle to rescue Sita. • It is recorded in the epic Ramayana, a Hindu scripture. www.makemegenius.com Free Science Videos for Kids

  6. Durgotsav –Durga Puja • This day also marks the victory of Goddess Durga , a Hindu goddess of power • Riding on a lion, who assisted her, Durga fought Mahishasura. The battle raged for nine days and nights. Finally on the tenth day , Mahishasura was defeated and killed by Durga.So this festival is also called Vijay Dashmi (victory on tenth day) • Hence Dasha-Hara is also known as Navratri or Durgotsav and is a celebration of Durga's victory. • It is a day when devotees worship Goddess Shakti( of power) • Shakti represents strength, ability and courage. www.makemegenius.com Free Science Videos for Kids

  7. Dusshera- Celebrations • In most of India , Dasha-Hara is celebrated more in honour of Rama. During these 10 days many plays and dramas based on Ramayana are performed. These are called Ramlila. • There are fairs and large parades with effigies of Ravana (a mythical king of ancient Sri Lanka), his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnad. The effigies are burnt on bonfires in the evening. • Science : After Dasara, the hot summer ends, especially in North India. The onset of cold weather is believed to encourage infections.
