  5. HCTZ Cont. • Warnings • Replace K • Take with food or milk • Photosensitivity • Watch for dehydration • Drugs are related to sulfa

  6. HCTZ Cont. Also know as Hctz most commonly referred to by DR’s

  7. Aldactonespironolactone • Diuretic • Aldosterone receptor blocker • Indications • Edema • Htn • Action • Inhibits reabsorption of sodium and water by competitively inhibiting aldosterone.

  8. Aldactone cont. • Causes less K loss • Warnings • D/D • Take with food or milk • May reduce serum testosterone levels resulting in gynecomastia and reduced sex drive

  9. Aldactone cont. • Drug interactions • Digoxin • Anticoagulants • Ace inhibitors

  10. Maxzide/Dyazidetriamterne/hydrochlorothiazide • See Hctz

  11. K-Durpotassium chloride • Indication • hypokalemia • Warnings • replaces potassium • Interactions • Take with food/milk • Take with plenty of water

  12. EPOGEN/PROCRITepoetinalfa recombinant • Indication • anemia associated with renal failure, treatment induced anemia in HIV or cancer chemotherapy • Action • mimics natural erythropoietin stimulating RBC production

  13. Epogen/Procrit cont. • Warning • keep refrigerated. • For SC or IV use only. • Do not shake.. • procrit - Google Videos

  14. Neupogenfilgrastim • Indication: • decrease infections in persons receiving chemotherapy • Action: • mimics natural G-CSF stimulating neutrophil production

  15. Neupogen cont. • Warnings: • refrigerate, • do not shake. • For SC or IV use. • May cause n/v, • bone pain.

  16. Pyridiumphenazopyridine • Indication: • relief of pain, discomfort caused by UTI • Action: • unknown. • Local analgesic effect.

  17. Pyridium cont. • Warnings: • may discolor urine, • take with food. • Drink 2-3l of fluid daily. • For short term use only

  18. Ciprociprofloxacin • Fluoroquinoloneantibiotic • Indication: • UTIs • Action: • interferes with DNA gyrase in bacteria. Effective against gram-positive and gram-negative.

  19. Cipro cont. • Warnings: • do not take with milk or antacids, • photosensitivity, • D/D, • increase water intake, • may decrease effectiveness of BCPs. • Avoid use in children, • may damage cartilage and surrounding tissues

  20. Macrodantin/Macrobidnitrofurantoin • Indication: • prevention and treatment of UTIs • Action: • inhibits protein, DNA, RNA and cell wall synthesis • Warnings: • take w/food or milk, may discolor urine, avoid alcohol

  21. Osmitrolmannitol • Indications: • promote diuresis in acute renal failure, intracranial edema, promote urinary excretion of toxins, GU irrigant • Action: • increases urinary output by increasing osmotic pressure of glomerularfiltrate

  22. Osmitrol • Warnings: • protect from low temperatures, • this may cause crystallization. • These crystals may be dissolved with heat and shaking—follow instructions. Exposure to pvc may cause white flocculent precipitate.

  23. Calcium Chloridecalcium chloride • Replacement therapy • Indications: • to replace or augment bodies nutrients due to disease or treatments • Electrolytes are essential for body’s function. • Diuretics for example can detrimentally deplete supply affecting body function. May be used in TPN • Care must be taken that patient does not develop a hyper state of these chemicals

  24. CA CONT. • Diuretics for example can detrimentally deplete supply affecting body function. May be used in TPN • Care must be taken that patient does not develop a hyper state of these chemicals
