Benefits of Using Twitter in the Classroom • Keeping up with current events is easy and convenient as a follower can pick a topic that interests them and learn more. • Science • NASA, National Geographic • News • CNN, The Today Show • Politics • CATO(catoinstitute), The White House The National Geographic has quizzes and facts as well as questions that can be used to generate discussion about what is happening. The tweets are in real time so the students will be connected with what is happening in the world. If you find something that you like, you can retweet it to your followers to pass the message along to others. With more and more people using twitter as a way to keep up with people it will become important for future students.
Problems with Using Twitter in the Classroom • There are many organizations and people that can be followed so it will be important to select verified twitters to follow. • As with anything in the classroom there will have to be restrictions and guidelines. • The program has the ability to add a location so people will know where you are, which I did not feel comfortable about setting. • With twitter being in realtime, it might be good for a teacher to research a topic before starting a classroom discussion. Some current topics might be sensitive to some students, such as students whose parents are in the military, minorities, unemployed parents/caregivers, etc… What I learned from researching Twitter • It is fun to follow and see what people are talking about. • Many school districts are using Twitter. • TEA uses Twitter so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening with Texas Teachers.
