Recommended Chemistry Textbook • Silberberg, Chemistry, 6th edition, McGraw-Hill ISBN 9780073402659 • No Required Laboratory Textbook • Laboratory Handouts will be used.
Required Materials • Notebook • Writing Instrument • Scientific calculator of some type • Internet Access is needed • A good attitude and a willingness to work
Course Requirements • Weekly Quizzes 45% of the grade • Labs 20% of the grade • On-line Homework 10% of the grade • Competencies 5% of the grade • Final Exam 20% of the grade • A final grade of 70 or better will be required to pass this course.

Student Attendance Policy • You must attend at least80% of the classes to pass this class. • Three tardies to class may be counted as one absence. • Students are responsible for work and information given in class whether they are present or not.
WebAssign Homework • On-line homework is due at 11:30 PM on the night before the quizzes. Make-ups or extensions are at the discretion of the instructor. • It is important that students remain up with their homework assignments this semester.
Quizzes • Quizzes will be given throughout the semester during the regular class period. Missed quizzes can be taken during the class period for another class (preferred) or later during the same quiz day. Students will be allowed no make-up quizzes during the semester. However, the two lowest quizzes will be dropped this semester.
Competencies • Competencies are specific chemistry skills on a test that must be met each week to pass this course. If a student misses a competency, they will have to make up that competency at a time designated by the instructor or they will receive a 0.5 point penalty per competency on the next test. • Students with more than two outstanding competencies will not be allowed to take the final exam.
CHM 151-01 General Chemistry I Laboratory • The laboratory part of this course will be on Thursday mornings from 9:00 to 11:50 AM in Holly 221. • There is no required laboratory manual for this course. Lab information for each laboratory experiment can be downloaded from either WebAssignor Moodle. Make-ups or extensions on the prelab assignments will not be given.
CHM 151-02 General Chemistry I Laboratory • The laboratory part of this course will be on Thursday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:50 PM in Holly 221. • There is no required laboratory manual for this course. Lab information for each laboratory experiment can be downloaded from either WebAssign or Moodle. Make-ups or extensions on the prelab assignments will not be given.
Communication Devices • Cell phones, mp3 players, etccause unnecessary disruption to the teaching/learning process. Out of courtesy to others, all systems of communication should be in quiet position during class, testing or lab. • Students should not text, answer or place calls during class.
Lab Attire • To prevent injuries in the laboratory, students are required to wear shoes that cover their heels and toes. Sandals are not permitted. A student who does not wear proper shoes will not be allowed to work in the lab. Eye protection is mandatory; safety glasses will be provided for students and must be worn at all times in the lab.
Food - Smoke & Drug Free • There is to be no eating or drinking in the classroom or lab area. Please remember that Wayne Community College is a tobacco-free and drug-free institution. Tobacco products and drugs are not to be utilized at any time while on any part of the college campus including but not limited to parking lots, walkways, stairwells, or inside buildings.

Communication with Students • Remind 101 – Remind 101 is a great way for instructors to text message students about important things in class. • Moodle – Moodle is good for general announcements concerning this class. • WebAssign – WebAssign is the place to ask questions about homework or to request a homework extension.

I can be reached on twitter @chemistrywcc. • Google Plus – Google + hangouts is a great way to ask homework questions via the Internet and a webcam.
