The Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF) • Mentoring • Helps Yourself • Helps Others • Helps Others to Help Themselves • Grows the Members • Grows the Membership • Grows the Club
Current Mentor Program • Helps new members become comfortable with Toastmasters • Helps new members feel comfortable with the group • Important for at least the first three speeches • Important for all meeting duties and responsibilities
Current Mentor Program • Vice-President for Education is the primarily responsible • Vice-President for Membership has collateral responsibility • Some clubs have a mentoring coordinator • Key success area for an achievement-oriented Club • Single point of failure for a dysfunctional Club
Importance • A shared experience between mentor and mentee • Becoming a full successful Toastmaster is a marathon not a sprint • Best way for the training and education process to operate • Needed for both communication and leadership tracks
Who Are Mentors/Mentees • Mentors are seasoned, professional, more experience Toastmasters • Recommend Competent Communicators and above • Advisors/Consultants to all members on all things Toastmastering • Mentees are all members, especially new members (Toastmasters Interns)
Four Phases • Initiation • Recognized as Protégé • Protégé • Work recognized as product of mentor • Breakup • Protégé goes on course • Hopefully long lasting relationship remains • New Mentor Phase • Protégé becomes a mentor • Never severs ties with original mentor
Program Success • Strengthens mentor, mentee, and Club • Sets mentee up for current and future successes • Great selling point to guests • Great retention tool for new members • Creates more defined and repeatable processes and procedures in the Club • Lessens dependence on Club “Heroes”
Quotes • Mentoring teaches intangibles that become second nature • Sonny Jurgensen • Training plus experience equals confidence • Ralph Jones • I am a better coach than I am a player • Ralph Jones
