What is Memorial Day? • Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (on May 25 in 2009). • It commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military. • Many Americans also use Memorial Day to honor other family members who have died. • It is common for fire and police departments to remember and honor members lost in the line of duty.
Patriotic Displays Families and businesses often put out American Flags.
Picnics, Barbecues, Family gatherings, and Sports Events. Families celebrate “the beginning of summer by playing sports and spending time with friends and relatives.
Parades Parades are held on military bases and in communities around the country.
Memorials Families and friends visit gravesites of fallen soldiers.
