NWCCU Standard 8 Town Hall Update – Nov 12, 2008 Co-chairs Keith Rogers, CAEO, UNLV Dave James, VPAA, UNLV
Standard 8 – Physical Resources • Common themes • Sufficient in quality and amount • Achieve “sufficient” and “adequate” based upon institution’s mission and goals • Comprehensive, consistent planning to attain mission
Why is this important? • How would you “grade” an institution of higher learning that had • Insufficient classrooms, labs and equipment to achieve its mission? • Facilities inconsistent with mission? • Lack of planning tied to mission or arbitrary planning not tied to mission?
8A – Instructional and Support Facilities expectations • Seven sections addressing: • Design, construction, furnishing, assignment, management and maintenance of • On-site and off-site instructional facilities
8B – Equipment and Materials Expectations • Three sections addressing: • Provision, access and maintenance of equipment • Use, storage and disposal of hazardous materials
8C –– Physical Resources Planning Expectations • Four sections addressing: • Consistency of master planning with educational goals • Planning for adequacy of required capital and operating funds • Access for physically impaired and appropriate security • Involvement of governing board and constituent groups in planning
Accomplishments to date • Most of data collected, except for Spring 2009 surveys • Evaluated other institutions’ Standard 8 reports for use as a template • Various authors starting to write sections of report
What have we learned?8A – Facilities • Benchmarking – shows UNLV’s space per FTE student is adequate but far below peer institutions • Facilities appear to be adequate to attain mission • Surveys indicate satisfaction levels comparable to or higher than peer institutions
What have we learned? 8B – Equipment & materials • Benchmarking - Campus-wide computing equipment and networking is adequate • Awaiting department and college self-studies about instructional facilities • Student survey for OIT services to be redone Spring 2009 • Adequate hazardous materials training, handling, storage disposal
What have we learned?8C – Planning • Campus master plan not specifically linked to educational strategic planning • Academic Resources and Construction planning are adequate • Continually updating facilities for ADA compliance • Some involvement of constituencies (advisory boards, Foundation) in planning
Plans - 2008-2009 • November - Compile first drafts of report sections from institution-wide units • January - Analyze and condense Std 8 data from dept/college self-studies and incorporate • March - Assemble complete draft report and send to Steering Committee for review • Some parts will be blank, awaiting survey data to be collected Spring 2009
Plans for 2009 • Incorporate survey data to be completed Spring 2009 (eg OIT) • Populate summary tables for report • Revise report per Steering committee feedback • Send out for campus review • Develop appendices and data for Accreditation web page
