What is 3D Display? A 3D display is any display capable of conveying a perception of 3-D depth to the viewer. The idea is to present offset images that are displayed separately to each eye Then both images get processed in the brain and combine to provide depth creating a 3D image
Types of 3D Displays • Stereoscopic- different image to right and left eye • Autostereoscopic-multiple views of the same scene with both views visible from different angles. • Computer-generated holography- devices that make a light field. Similar to looking out a window at a recreated scene • Volumetric displays- displays that use voxels and not pixels. Example: multiplanar displays; multiple displays stacked up with rotating panel to sweep out volume
Advantages/Disadvantages of 3D Display Advantages Disadvantages • Can cause headaches and visual problems, especially in the elderly • Due to certain medical conditions, approximately 12% of people are unable to view 3D images • 3D technology can be costly • For businesses, a 3D image of a product can show possible changes that can be made before the product is constructed • Demonstrate product to potential customers before construction; saving time and money • Creates revenue-10% of top movie titles this year were 3D films • Enhances visual experience
Current Uses Movie theaters showing 3D movies New 3D TV’s 3D printers DLP Projectors 3D computer monitors
Future Uses Watching 3D movies and TV shows without the glasses Sports games will be in 3D Microscopes will be in 3D Holograms
Future Uses Samsung is working on technology that will use a new version of their TouchWiz Apple has bought several patents for their new 3D technology for the future of the IPhone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcuOiZA5KYs&feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcuOiZA5KYs&feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcuOiZA5KYs&feature=relmfu
Costs of 3D Displays The costs for 3D technology varies greatly depending upon the type of display Computer monitors ~ $330 - 10,000 3D TV’s ~ $1,500 - 10,000 3D printers ~ $800 – 20,000 depending on size
