Why Estimate? • It’s impossible to know the exact answer (predicting events in the future) • Finding an exact answer is not practical (United States population) • Finding an exact answer isn’t worth the trouble • Estimation can be useful even when you need to find an exact answer. It may help you to understand a problem better. It can also be used to check whether or not your exact answer makes sense. If your estimate is not close to the exact answer you found, then you need to check your work.
