Check your child’s current IEP to answer these questions: Does the first page of the IEP include all appropriate services? Do the “Present Levels of Performance” pages accurately reflect the academic, behavioral, social, and emotional strengths and challenges of my child? Does the “Special Factors” section accurately reflect the location of the services and how those services should be provided? Does my child have goals that address each of his/her needs? If you do not hear from your child’s case manager by the end of the first week of school, call the school. Be sure the school has valid contact information for you (emails are very helpful). Review your child’s IEP, class schedule, and supports with his/her case manager. How do I make sure my child receives the right services?
How can I help my child succeed at iMiddle? • Make sure that your child has a all the supplies they will need throughout the school year. • As the year progresses, get to know all of your child’s teachers, and don’t hesitate to contact them if your gut tells you a problem is percolating. • Help your child be a self-advocate. Encourage him/her to discuss problems and solutions with teachers, but be ready to step in and help as needed. • Check Power School on a regular basis for any missing work and to verify grades. • Help your child manage stress by making sure he/she eats right, exercises regularly, and gets enough sleep. • Attend school programs and special events, student showcases, athletic events, and parent/teacher conferences to send a message that you think school is important.
