Depicting Operational Flight Hazards in Tropical Cyclones

This project aims to assist the DoD in producing meteorologically sound aviation hazard products related to tropical cyclones. Using NHC forecasts, we aim to create graphic depictions for TSTMs, TURBC, and ICG hazards. Considerations include coverage size, intensity thresholds, and standard depictions for various cyclone sizes.

  1. Depicting Operational Flight Hazards in Tropical Cyclones by Lt Mike Bielas Mr Peter Copeskey Capt LaCroix

  2. Concept/Mission • Assist DoD in producing meteorologically sound hazard products associated with tropical cyclones for aviation use • Graphic forecast depictions will be 00hr to 48hr point for TSTMs, TURBC, ICG • Considerations: resolution due to different size AORs and graphical depiction standards IAW AFMAN 15-129 • NHC forecasts used as primary source to develop graphics – no deviations

  3. OWS AORs E 0 100 60° N 49° N 45 W 0 135° W 159° E 32° N 28° N 22° N E ° 0 68 0 5 S 25 OWS 120° W 30°W 40° E 0 66.5 S Antarctica

  4. 25OWS AOR TS Depiction

  5. Tropical Cyclone TS Depiction • Should there be a set standard or template? i.e. based on cyclone’s intensity or size • Should there be a set coverage size? i.e. 300nm diameter for Cat III or higher • Should there be standard coverage amounts be for a given area? i.e. ISOLD, FEW, SCT, or NMRS

  6. 25OWS TURBC Depiction

  7. Tropical Cyclone TURBC Depiction • Should there be a set standard or template? i.e. based on cyclone’s intensity or size • What are the likely intensity thresholds? MDT, SVR, EXTRM • At what flight levels are these intensities most likely found within the cyclone?

  8. Tropical Cyclone ICG Depiction?

  9. Tropical Cyclone ICG Depiction? • Should there be any ICG depicted at all? • Should there be a set standard or template? i.e. based on cyclone’s intensity or size • What is threat for icing outside of thunderstorm activity or convective activity in general? • If so, what intensities/flight levels will ICG be found within the cyclone?

  10. Depicting Operational Hazards in Tropical CyclonesSummary • Sound meteorological solutions with references and documented experiences add validity to our proposed tropical cyclone hazards depiction solution • Thank you for your time, expertise, and valuable input into this process
