7 PLASTICS THAT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF Summary - Natural plastic raw material finds many applications in our daily life. Plastics are also used there where you couldn’t even think of it. Explore the world of plastics more to help find their replacement and better usage. LET'S EXPLORE THE MOST USED MATERIAL IN THE WORLD-PLASTIC! 1. PET – Acronym for Polyethylene Terephthalate or polyester is not the usual plastic bag we see. PET is also regarded as a wrinkle-free fiber. It makes up a strong outside layer and thus finds wide applications in packaging purposes. The packed food items and drinks are encased with this Polyethylene Terephthalate as this prevents the entry of air and thus food remains fresh. It also blocks the exit of Carbon dioxide in carbonated drinks. Although Polyethylene Terephthalate is recyclable the chemicals released by it are very harmful. The Antimony Trioxide liberated by this plastic is a potent carcinogenic which means it can cause cancer in living organisms. The release of harmful chemicals from this plastic is accelerated by warm temperature conditions. 2. PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride is the second most plastic-type used worldwide. It is extensively used for manufacturing toys, pipes, detergent containers, binders, wraps, and medical equipment. PVC has been declared as the most toxic plastic which can cause serious health complications in living organisms. It’s not just harmful to human beings but also equally harmful to aquatic life. The common carcinogenic chemicals released by PVC are lead, mercury, cadmium, and so on. Hence, it must be reduced as soon as possible. 3. HDPE – High-density Polyethylene is a thick and dense plastic type. It is looked upon as a safer option and is hence preferred for manufacturing packaging for food, milk, and medicines. Moreover, plastic importers in India claim this plastic-type to be most recyclable and stable. 4. LDPE – Low-density Polyethylene is the most used plastic worldwide. The simple polymer chain structure allows easy and cheap manufacturing. It is highly flexible because of its not ordered and low-density structure. They are broadly used for the production of squeezable bottles, storage containers, wires, cable envelopes, carry bags, wraps, etc. LDPE is not-recyclable at all. 5. PP – Polypropylene is a heat-resistant plastic variety. This is also considered safe for storing food and liquid items. The strength is somewhere between High-density Polyethylene and Low-density Polyethylene. The sad part is that this variety is not recyclable. Also, few types of research suggest their toxicity which may lead to breathing complications and hormonal disruption in human beings.
6. PS- PS stands for Polystyrene is a Styrofoam generally deployed for making disposable cups, disposable plates, egg cartons, etc. PS recycles at an extremely slow rate and also releases toxins when exposed to hot and oily food. 7. Others – There are many other forms of plastics available that have not been categorized under the above-mentioned classifications. Polycarbonate (PC) mainly falls under this category.
