  8. 900 BC – 1500 AD: Indigenous people • Similar to North America, Brazil was originally inhabited by tribes of indigenous people, called the Tupi or Tupinamba • Tribes spoke a common language but were constantly at war with other tribes; practice of cannibalistic rituals on captured enemies occurred • Around 1MM Tupi existed around 1500 when the Portuguese began settling • Mostly wiped out or assimilated, a few reservations of Tupi still exist

  9. 1500 – Spanish and Portuguese sail to Americas, conquer • In 1494, Treaty of Tordesillas divided the new world with arbitrary line: west of the line was Spain’s, east was Portugal’s; Portugal unknowingly ended up with much of Brazilian coast • In 1500, Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil and claimed it for Portugal

  10. 1822 – Empire of Brazil • Brazil declared its independence from Portugal and became the Empire of Brazil • Pedro I became Emperor of Brazil; many rebellions followed

  11. 1889 – Old Republic • Brazil became the Republic of the United States of Brazil • Although officially a democracy, only certain people could vote

  12. 1930 – End of The Old Republic • Impact of worldwide depression leads to fall of the republic • Getulio Vargas rides populist movement to power • Brazil forced into WWII, supports Allies with BEF in Italy • Republic restored briefly, known as the Republic of ‘46

  13. 1964 – Military Dictatorship • Growing military influence and fear of Communism leads to rebellion • Army Marshal CastelloBranco becomes first military dictator (appointed President) • Leads to a period of nationalism, economic development, and repression of freedoms in the name of anti-communism

  14. 1977: Manufactured goods earn more than agricultural products • Post-1964 policies spurred external trade faster than economy – significant growth in exports and imports • 1968-1973 rapid growth (GDP Growth - 13.1%) • Consumer durables, transportation equipment, steel, cement, electricity • Considerable modernization in industrial sector • Semi-process manufactured exports - % of total exports • 1963: 5%; 1974: 29%

  15. 1985: Brazil returns to democracy • 1984: Public demonstrations made it clear military rule would not continue • New Republic: End of military regime – last military hand-picked President • New constitution drafted (wishes of passing President) and implemented 1988, replacing authoritarian legislation • 1989 – first presidential elections by popular ballot (29 year lapse) • 2010 – First woman elect president of Brazil
