Short story unit. 6L11. Do now. As readers we have to know from which perspective a story is told. This knowledge helps us understand the narrator best and helps us decide if the narrator is trustworthy or not.

  2. Do now • As readers we have to know from which perspective a story is told. This knowledge helps us understand the narrator best and helps us decide if the narrator is trustworthy or not. • I was tired from working all day. I went home , mumbled, “hi” to my roommate and threw myself on the bed. I felt bad for not speaking to my roommate but I really needed to get to sleep. • What do we know about this narrator? • A first-person narrator is an inside narrator, meaning that the reader can know all the thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams, etc. of the narrator. In this sentence we know that the narrator felt bad about mumbling to her roommate but was too tired to do otherwise • Rachel was tired from working all day. She dragged herself up the stairs and mumbled “hi” to her roommate. She longed for her bed. Her roommate noticed how tired Rachel looked. She watched quietly as Rachel mumbled “hi” to her while walking to her room and quickly shutting the door. “Rachel is obviously tired. Poor thing” she thought to herself. • [Sometimes, a third-person narrator will know everyone’s thoughts and feelings, so the narrator would be much less biased. This type of narrator would be omniscient, meaning “all knowing.” In this sentence we see Rachel’s roomate’s thoughts. We know how all the character’s are feeling and thinking]

She was very tired. • From what POV is this paragraph written? • A third-person narrator may be restricted, or limited, in what he or she knows. a third-person narrator might only know one character’s side of the story and could be biased in the same way. In this example we do not know how Rachel’s roommate feels. We only know how Rachel feels.

  6. Identify the pov • The Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum • The Scarecrow found a tree full of nuts and filled Dorothy’s basket with them, so that she would not be hungry for a long time. She thought this was very kind and thoughtful of the Scarecrow, but she laughed heartily at the awkward way in which the poor creature picked up the nuts. His padded hands were so clumsy that he dropped almost as many as he put in the basket. But the Scarecrow did not mind how long it took him to fill the basket, for it enabled him to keep away from the fire, as he feared a spark might get into his straw and burn him up (49). She peered at her reflection as she walked, carefully examining the lipstick she had just put on. “Stop whinin’ baby. Just straighten things up before you leave for school. I’m late for work.” “I’m not going to school today,” Cindy declared. She waited to see if her mother would get angry and insist that she go.   10. Identify the pov • Timmy Turner was rushing to get to school because he was going on a field trip. Timmy felt so happy and excited that he was going on his first field trip of the year. Timmy thought that everything was going to go good that day. Third-Person Limited

  11. Identify the pov • Emma thought and she thought: How can I make people notice me? Then, Emma’s two twin nieces ran in the kitchen and asked Emma to make a batch of cookies for their class. She did, and the next day at the bake sale, lots of children and parents were buying her cookies. Lots of people were thinking about her cookies and how good they were. All the other years Emma would go home with over 200 cookies left, but that year she went home with none, all thanks to her nieces. Third-Person Omniscient

  12. Identify the pov • Emma never seemed to reach her goal. She knew that her cookies were good but she could never raise the 500 dollars to enter the contest. None of the other contestants even looked her way. Third-Person Limited

  13. Homework • Now, pretend you are a character at the barber shop where Captain Torres is getting a shave. Write a diary entry from a different point of view, responding to the actions of the Barber as he shaved Torres. You may take the POV of Captain Torres, one of his revolutionaries, or a rebel. What were you thinking and feeling? Use specific and relevant evidence from the text for support.
