Sugar-Sweetened DrinksWhat are they? • A Sugar-sweetened drink is any non-alcoholic beverage with an added sugar-based, caloric sweetener, including sucrose, fructose, glucose, high fructose corn syrup, and other sugars. SSDs include: • Soda • non-100%-fruit drinks • sports drinks • flavored water • energy drinks • pre-sweetened coffee and tea
Sugar-Sweetened DrinksSo What? • Sugar-sweetened drinks are the largest single source of added sugar in the American diet • We are consuming 200-300 more calories than 30 yr/ago • Half of these calories are from sugar-sweetened beverages • Extra calories = Extra weight • One can of soda/day = 10 pounds weight gain/year
