  2. Hans Holbein • He was born in Augsburg,Germany in 1497. • His family is especially famous for the father Hans the Elder. • He was later celebrated for his paintings.

  3. Holbein’s Paintings • He did pen-and-ink sketches • Like Erasmus’ “Praise of Folly” • In addition, he decorated Luther’s version of The New Testament.

Hans Holbeins’ father • He was also known as Hans the elder. • He wasborn in Augsburg, Germany in about 1460 and he died there in 1524. • Holbein the Elder excelled in painting Religious objects. • His “Martyrdom of St Catherine”and “Martyrdom of Sebastian” are both especially beautiful for their radiance and color.

Famous Portraits • Rubens said of Holbein, “He is the painter of living, breathing truth.” • He drew portraits of: Sir Thomas and Lady Elliot, John Fisher, Sir Edward Gage, And The Earl of South Ampton. • Some of his famous portraits done in oil are those of:Erasmus, King Henry VIII, Jane Seymour, The Duchess of Milan, And George Gisze.
