  2. Why Teach Fluency? • Fluency is the bridge between the words and comprehension • Fluency requires automacity and prosody

  3. Research • 100 studies on repeated reading show that when kids have repeated reading opportunities they grow in harder texts. • US department of education shows that 4th grade oral reading fluency is a strong predictor of silent reading comprehension. • Evidence suggests that fluency can be taught and leads to overall improvement in reading

  4. Fluency Instruction Includes… • Accuracy- Word Ladders, Making Words • Model- read alouds • Assisted Reading- choral, paired, audio assisted, and caption video text • Practice- performance, plays, poetry (provide purpose and voice) • Phrasing- meaningful chunks Synergy- putting it all together

  11. Romeo and Juliet Told Through Sports Idioms Right off the bat, Romeo knew he was in love with Juliet. The problem was that across the board, the Capulets hated the Montagues. Romeo was behind the eight ball before he even had a chance to get the ball rolling. He knew it would be tough to score points with Juliet’s parents, but he didn’t throw in the towel quite yet. He danced with her at the Capulet’s ball, and their relationship was off and running. When Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, saw them together, he blew the whistle on Romeo. Juliet’s father said that he would call the shots because it was his party, and Romeo was allowed to stay.
