Witness to the World John 18-20
The Witness to the World • The personal witness – arrest and trial of Jesus (18) • The painful witness – death and burial of Jesus (19) • The glorious witness – resurrection of Jesus (20)
1After Jesus had said these things, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and He and His disciples went into it. 2 Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 So Judas took a company of soldiers and some temple police from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. John 18:1-3 HCSB
4 Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to Him, went out and said to them, “Who is it you’re looking for?” 5 “Jesus the Nazarene,” they answered. “I am He,” Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed Him, was also standing with them. 6 When He told them, “I am He,” they stepped back and fell to the ground. 7 Then He asked them again, “Who is it you’re looking for?” “Jesus the Nazarene,” they said. John 18:4-7 HCSB
8 “I told you I am [He],” Jesus replied. “So if you’re looking for Me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the words He had said: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.” 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. (The slave’s name was Malchus.) 11 At that, Jesus said to Peter, “Sheathe your sword! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given Me?” John 18:8-11 HCSB
The Personal Witness—Absolute Surrender • It begins with devotion to God (vs.1-3). • Devotion brings about submission and determination. (vs.4-6). • Submission and determination to the will of God brings about protection (vs.7-9). • All of this leads to an unswerving obedience (vs.10-11).
The Painful Witness—Paying for Our Sin • The death of Jesus paid the penalty of sin. • Hebrews 10:10 By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all. • Jesus died once for all
The Glorious Witness—Sin and Death Conquered • If a man wishes to discover the empty tomb, he must get up and "go out" to look at it. (20:3-4) • Everything changes when Jesus calls your name at the empty tomb. (20:11-18) • Changes from despair to excitement. • Changes from confusion to confidence.
