  1. Platonic Solids Mrs. King Image from: http://www.learner.org/interactives/geometry/platonic.html

  2. What is a Platonic Solid? • A regular, convex polyhedron. • A polyhedron is a 3D geometric solid with flat faces and straight edges. • The faces of a Platonic solid are congruent regular polygons, with the same number of faces meeting at each vertex. • All edges are congruent. • All angles are congruent.

  3. There are only 5 Platonic Solids! Tetrahedron

  4. There are only 5 Platonic Solids! Cube

  5. There are only 5 Platonic Solids! Octahedron

  6. There are only 5 Platonic Solids! Dodecahedron

  7. There are only 5 Platonic Solids! Icosahedron

  8. Tetrahedron Lesson #1

  9. Assemble Your Tetrahedron!

  10. Let’s Explore a Tetrahedron! • http://www.learner.org/interactives/geometry/platonic.html

  11. Fun Facts • The tetrahedron also has a beautiful and unique property ... all four vertices are the same distance from each other! • And it is the only Platonic Solid with no parallel faces. • The plural of tetrahedron is tetrahedra. From: http://www.mathsisfun.com/ geometry/tetrahedron.html

  12. Formulas: • Surface Area: • Volume: • Example: Find the surface area AND volume of a tetrahedron with an edge 3 cm long.
