THE BASICS Weather: mild climate, mountains protect from cold winds, average summer temperature = 80°F Food: traditional seafood, la SaladeNiçoise, bouillabaisse Language: French (different accent), 1/3 of the population speaks Occitan Geography: North: the Alps, South: Mediterranean Sea, covered in tropical vegetation Geography provides: seaside resorts – aquatic sports and swimming, countryside – hiking, beautiful scenery everywhere Things to do: biking/Vespa tours, sailing, fishing, swimming, golfing, painting/photographing scenery

HISTORY • 6th century B.C. – Massilia (Marseille) established by Greeks • 2nd century B.C. – Provence/La Côte d’Azur formed part of Gallia Transalpina • 4th century A.D. – Marseille recognized as the main center of Greek studies in the west • 536 A.D. – the region came under Franck rule • 10th century – called the Kingdom of Arles • 1113 – came under the Spanish rule • 1486 – annexed back to the French under King Louis XI
