Imagine if you didn’t know how to get online… Define Exclude 1. to keep out; prevent from entering 2. to reject or not consider; leave out (Collins Dictionary) What is digital exclusion? • Not having skills or confidence to go online • Not having internet access • Not having access to technology to go online Over 7 million people in the UK are Digitally Excluded

  6. Digital Exclusion is a big issue for older people • Two thirds of people aged 75+ have never been online • A third of people aged 65+ have never been online • Why is age a factor?

  7. Have you ever helped a family member or friend get online? Some people have been online but need help to learn new skills and become more confident.

Digital Natives V Digital Tourists ‘Digital Natives’ - born in 2000 or later, grew up in the digital age, have never known a world without the internet. ‘Digital Tourists’ – born before this time, many grew up before the internet was invented • As a Digital Native consider: • Why are some people still not online? • List 3 ways people’s everyday lives could be improved if they were online. • List 3 online skills you could share to help someone use the internet with confidence.

About BT Digital Champions • Over 7 million people in the UK have never been online. • BT Digital Champions are students that give an hour or more to help someone get online. • Students train people – either in organised school sessions or family or friends at home. • Students receive a Certificate for Record of Achievement. • A great chance to develop new skills and experience to help with further work, training or education. • Schools receive tickets for Rock Assembly 2014, a huge celebration rock concert! • Schools at the top of the ‘Leaderboard’ will receive special prizes.

  15. Who to train and how? • Any training that helps someone online counts – be guided by the trainee • Students can train family or friends as homework outside school. Or… • Schools can organise group training sessions. Some ideas: • Students train Year 5 Students from feeder primary schools • Train parents and grandparents during an Achievement Assembly • Host an ‘Ask the Geek’ Clinic at School Open Evening • Role Reversal - Students train teachers, kitchen staff, cleaners • Link with local shopping or community centre to staff a ‘Pop-up training shop’ • Share iPadskills with older generation at a community events • Consider events where you already have a ready made audience and link inOr create fun themed IT Training events: • Rock ‘n Role Reversal – show staff how to use iTunes, YouTube, GarageBand • Photoshop Fun • Who Do You Think You Are – go online to search your family tree

Preparing to Train – Before the Session • Create a login at www.btdigitalchampions.com using a code supplied by your teacher (starting DC) Please ensure you register as a STUDENT not as a teacher or your hours will not count. • Think about the type of things people may need help with. There are fact sheets on the website to help if you need some ideas or you can ask your trainee: (Enjoying Music; Family History; Reading the News; Shopping; Using Skype and lots more) www.btdigitalchampions.com • Consider how the trainee may be feeling about learning something new

Preparing to Train – During the Session • Ask questions – what are they interested in eg: facebook; shopping; what’s on in the community; news etc • Set goals – what do you plan to cover during the hour • 6 Steps for Training • Prepare • Listen • Demonstrate • Explain • Watch • Ask • Time Management and check pace is not too fast or slow

  18. After Training • Log in to www.btdigitalchampions.com and record your training. (If you haven’t created a login please create a STUDENT login) Without this there is no record of your work as a BT Digital Champion. • On the record remember to tell us how the training went and what you did. • Ask the trainee to complete an online survey to say how they found the training session (this is not compulsory but we would love to hear their views) Good Example: “I showed her how to upload photos to facebook, and change her privacy settings. It was the first time she had done it. I enjoyed training.” Poor Example: “It went well.”
