What do you think about the business practices of Carnegie, Rockefeller and Vanderbilt?
Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, and John Rockefeller were seen as Robber Barons because they made LOTS of money, but their workers made little and worked in harsh conditions..Based on what we have learned so far, is that a fair name?
Ideas of the day • Social Darwinism • term coined in the late 19th century to describe the idea that humans, like animals and plants, compete in a struggle for existence in which natural selection results in "survival of the fittest.“ • Nativism • Native born are superior
Gospel of Wealth • Which meant that wealthy people were morally obligated to give their money back to others in society
Carnegie’s Charities • 1902 he founded the Carnegie Institution to fund scientific research and established a pension fund for teachers with a $10 million donation • gave money to towns and cities to build more than 2,000 public libraries. • He also gave $125 million to a foundation called the Carnegie Corporation to aid colleges and other schools (including Carnegie Mellon University) • Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and funded the building of the Hague Palace of Peace, which houses the World Court, in the Netherlands. • Created numerous museums, including Carnegie Museum of Pittsburg • 90% of his fortune was given away!
After the Spanish American War, Carnegie offered to donate $20 million to the Philippines so they could buy their independence
Rockefeller gives away $500 million, was left was about $26 million
What about this??? • Vanderbilt gave away just over $1 million, died with $95 million dollars • Carnegie did not support his workers when they went on strike because of wage cuts • In the end, longer hours and less wages….
